My roommate lost a check I wrote him?
I wrote my check for $85 that i owed him...anyway he lost it somewhere and wants me to write him another one...i have no problem with this I trust him completely so i dont care about that...what I am worried about is that someone else may have found it and is going to cash it? what are the odds of that? My back charges $20 for a stop payment order so I dont really want to do that if the odds are no one is going to cash it anyways....

First of all, a check doesnt go through unless it has that person's name on it. I would cash it anyway though just to be on the safe side and write him another one. If the chance that the check does go through, you've lost $85. Which is worse losing? I'd say the $20 is worth it, but make him pay for it. You shouldn't have to pay for your lost check if your roommate is the one who lost it.

but again, you really don't have that much to worry about. Unless he has the same exact name as your roommate and unless your roommate endorsed it, then whoever finds it can't cash the check so it would be pretty much useless to him.

you cant cash a check if its not in your name. if someone finds it, they cant do anything with it.

If your roommate already signed the check, it is likely that anyone could take the check to a cashing place and cash it. I would do the stop payment even though it costs some money. It is better to be out $20 than $85 to some random stranger.

Don't rewrite him a check!
Go get cash! If he loses that, it's 100% his fault.
And checks are valid for 1 year, unless otherwise written on the check.

Life is Good
Actually there are places that'll cash the cheque even on somebody else's name.
Charge him the $20 for losing the cheque then write him another one.
The fool can lose that new one as well if he wants, so long as he keeps on paying the $20..

I would pay for the stop payment. It's worth it in case someone did get the check and could possibly cash it. Then give him another one.

call your bank, and ask them if the first check has been deposited. if not, then have them cancel that first check..then just write him another one , and tell him not to lose it this time, because you won't be writing another one

chances are the bank will notice that there is a different name than what is on the check and will not allow it to be cashed. All checks are void after 180 days!

Write a new check for $65 and tell roomate that his
stupidity will cost him $20 for the stop payment on the first
check.

turkeybrooknj
If you made it out to him, it is probably not likely that anyone will cash it since most banks will not cash 2nd party checks (made out to someone else and cashed by a different party). If he signed it before losing it, that might be a problem. If you made it out to cash, it would be best to put a stop payment on it (and you could ask him to pay for the stop payment, if you felt that it was his responsibility; you would need to explain that to him because you shouldn't have to pay money for his loss of the check.)
