My son had a savings account with $1000 in it. He earned a whopping 52 cents interest in a year.?
I took it out and put it in my safe. F*** Wells Fargo. 52 cents on a thousand dollars for a year. Thats .00052 percent interest. Is this normal ?
Additional Details
Jake, I highly doubt you get 8% per month.

It is normal depending on the type of account. Typically Banks really don't pay any interest unless you have either a lot of $$$, or want to lock you the money for a long time. The best option currently is INGdirect, they give interest around the same rate as Banks 1-3 Year term deposits without having to lock you your money for the term.

Buyer Beware as most banks WILL not tell you that you are in the wrong account. My mother had the same information at her bank, after 60 years old, there are no banking fees charged ......BUT only if you ask them about it. Every year my mother would meet with the Bank's Financial Adviser to review her investments. Not once did the advise suggest the dropping of these fees (12.00/month) on her accounts. Needless to say once I found out we switched bank.s

Yeah, sounds about right. Go to www.ingdirect.com

Much better rate there.

Unfortunatly savings account dont pay much now at days. Put it into a Certificate Of Deposit account (CD) They earn much more interest and since it sounds like you can let the money sit for a long period of time this sounds like the perfect account for you. They pay more interest depending on lenght of time. The opening amount is $1,000.00

=)

try investing it into a CD or a bond. That will have a guarantee interest rate. Check with your banks, or investmants companies, to see what their rates are. I use CD's I get monthly interest invested back into the CD, so I also get compound interest. A good rate on a Cd is 4%-5%, but you can get better.

Wow that is bad try using ING Direct, HSBC, or
Charles Schwab

You're probably only earning like half a percent or something. That's what most banks give you on basic savings accounts. You should look in to opening a money market account instead. I know Citibank or ING have online savings accounts that pay a considerable amount of interest regardless of balance.

Autumn
Unfortunately it is when you invest in small town banks. Wells Fargo is good. I would try the internet banks. They, usually, offer good rates. I have several savings accounts with ING Direct (which is at 3% interest). If you want to keep his money locally, check out bankrate.com for the bank with the best interest rate in your area.

Yes, it's normal, what did you expect? $50?

Yes, I too doubt somebody gets 8% a month, or that'd be 270% by the end of the year. Insane.

But you should ask before you expect anything. Anybody stupid enough to settle for a measly 5% or less a year gets what they asked for. Nothing much.

You need to understand that interest rates are only going lower, so better to take the money, pay off some debt and save some real money. Or use the money to buy living goods in advance (or in bulk). EVERYTHING, literally EVERYTHING is above 5%, from tips to taxes to late fees, nevermind inflation rate.

I just don't understand why people let banks hold their money for a year and get less than 10% in return, ridiculous!

Terry S
Yes, the banks have made HUGE mistakes with the sub-prime mess and need to pay nothing on your savings and yet if you go and want to borrow money MAN are you going to pay big time.

Your son does not understand how the Federal Reserve Inflates the dollar and thus destroys the value of our money.

The 1,000 would have been better invested in 10 ounce bars of silver.

It sounds about right. I remember when banks paid 10%. If you had put it US savings bonds you would get a much higher rate of interest.

Easy answer... Go to fidelity.com an set up a custodial account. It will have you listed as the custodian. When he turns 18 it will transfer to his name. As long as the money withdrawn is used for his benefits there are no tax penalties. The earnings will be taxed at his level (which is probably zero since he probably doesnt have a job, so not enough earned income to have to file). You can invest the money into mutual funds or stocks. Worst case scenerio you put it into a money market which now will earn you 3%. That sucks that its still that low in the money market, but its definitely better than you are getting, and its no better in any other money market. I would start the custodial account (UTMA/UGMA) and put it all in an energy mutual fund (Fidelity Select Energy FSENX) and see what you can turn it into.
