Never had a credit card only a debit card?
I have a Barclay's debit card thinking of getting a Barclay's credit card to use occasionally and to pay off each month is this the best way to keep the cost down Thanks H.

If you're going to pay it off each month, then the interest rate makes no difference. Just be sure to find one without a monthly (or annual) fee. No reason to pay that when many are free. Just be sure you don't spend more than you can afford. Simple as that. I don't know why people have such problems with that - it's not very hard.

the only way to keep costs down is dont get one believe me! i have a natwest one and was really good at keeping costs down at first then it gets a bit tempting to use. i think you find yourself spending to much on it then paying it off then having to use it again as you have spent your money on paying it off!!!!! if you can manage without one dont be tempted.

Don't get any credit card. In an interview, the very rich boss of Barclaycard was asked by a journalist if he used credit cards.
His response? No, they are not good value for money.
True, paying off the balance monthly will keep the costs down, but ask yourself this.
If you can afford to pay it off each month, why do you need a credit card? Use your own cash to buy stuff, then you'll never have the temptation to spend more than you can actually repay straight away.
I got shot of the one I had. I won't be having another one. Ever.

If you really plan to pay it off each month, then you'd be paying fees & interest for a service you aren't using! Why not just keep using your debit card and flush a few quid down the toilet each money, if it makes you feel better!

MOST people have credit cards, but then most people are up to their eyeballs in debt, too! Credit cards are a very silly tool designed to make profit for banks by getting you to buy things with money you don't have yet!

Buck the trend. Live within your means. If you live well within your means and invest your leftover cash you'll get very rich really quite quickly.

Remember, smart people earn interest, dumb people pay it!

I've got a debit card, and doubt I'll ever get a credit card. My partner was in ten grand of debt when I met him, through loans and credit cards. My father also got into a load of debt with cards.

However, if you're certain that you want one, this finance site is really useful and helpful. Most of the time it's simple enough even for a person like me to understand! (and I have no head for figures, lol)

http://www.fool.co.uk/

It really is a website, lol. I'm not having you on or anything.

It is best to pay the full amount off each month and just be careful it's easy to get carried away - I know I've done it !!

Don't just go for a Barclaycard, look around and compare interest rates. I believe Barclaycard may have one of the
highest interest rates going.

In my opinion if you don't need one don't get one!!

Teej
Don't get it. Credit cards are unnecessary, I have cut all mine up and am better off for it. If you can pay the balance each month, by all means go for it, but why have another bill come in the mail every month?

Well definitely don't get a Barclaycard, their interest rate is horrendous, have a look around. There's loads, I used to have a Tesco one.

Credit cards aren't for everyone.

I got one sometime last year because i needed to make purchases on a website that only took credit cards, i only use it for that purpose and only if i have the money in my bank account so i can instantly transfer it to clear my credit card balance, i once made the mistake of forgetting to clear my balance in time and ended up incurring charges of £20 - suffice to say i learned my lesson and it hasn't and will not happen again.

If you can't be that self disciplined then don't get a credit card otherwise you will end up struggling to pay off debt.

My cousin got a credit card with the intention of clearing it each month, she now has 5, is 8 grand in debt and about to go bankrupt. Be careful and think hard.

If you are intending to pay it off each month then surely it is no different from a debit card. Or am I misssing something here?

Regardless of whether you get a credit card from them or not, there is no question that you should own a credit card. Just having it will at least be positive towards your credit score. Building your credit is one of the most important assets you can have!
