not enough info about your friend.

Any debt (excluding house payment)?
Do they own a home or have a reasonable secure place to live?
How old are they and when would they need a little some or all of the money?

1st pay off all debts but housing (unless it's under 100k or so then it could be a good course of action.)

2nd To start stick all of it in a High yield savings like and Ing or emigrant direct account.

3rd wait several months to let it all sink in and don't spend any (except to pay off high interest debt) Don't spend any!

4th Subtract 6 months of wages from the total after paying off debts, don't touch this amount for investing, this is the emergency fund it stays in the high yield savings.

5th The rest (that is 300k less debt, emergency fund, possible house payoff, etc) is divided by 12 months and used to invest. For example if they had 240k left then 20k a month is what to invest, don't throw all of the money in to investmest at once. Spread it out over a year, "dollar cost averaging"

What to stick the money in really depends on age!
If they are below 60 then at least 60% should be in stocks, US, foreign, eft's, mutual funds, etc... nice mix. Even at 60 or older 50% stocks is tollerable becasue they could live to 100.

See a finical adviser that gets paid by the hour!
NO COMMISSIONS PERIOD
If they even begin to mention an annuity punch them in the face and run like HE double hockey sticks.

With that kind of money I would go to a financial/investment advisor and let them invest it safely. I recently had my 401K rolled over to partial stocks (some international, some US) and bonds at a fixed rate. I used Edward Jones Investors.

Go to a qualified IFA who will review your friend's circumstances, needs and attitude to risk and find the best thing for him/her. Everyone is different thus where to invest will be different for each person.

In response to the person who said do not use an adviser that gets commission, an IFA must offer the choice of fees or commission and in some cases an hourly rate will prove to be far more expensive. Plus an IFA will say how much commission is being paid upfront rather than waiting with fees to find out in a final bill that it is much more than expected. So once again it comes down to the individual's own circumstances and preferences.

I'd split it and definitley put some at low risk, then maybe a medium risk. That money could go a long way!

Buy a couple of houses or flats and live on the rents. The capital will appreciate and likewise the income.

get the money and wire it to this account 10000000% in my interest 70-40-13 456723145

Have your friend talk to a reputable broker. Some Income funds, such as Franklin Templeton Income fund, pay a monthly divident of about 0.13 cents per share and that would amount to a monthly income of $1500 or so on an investment of $300,000
