On your credit report, there is a category for "inquiries",what exactly are they and who performs them?

Franco
No idea. Perhaps those who want to lend you money!

WOODDOGG1
inquiries are in place whenever your credit is pulled by a lendor of different resources, such as the gas co., your electric co., applying for a credit card, furniture on credit, buying a car. each time your credit is pulled your beacon score lowers by 4 points so you want to limit this. An example of this would be apllying online with lending tree, u are filling out a credit app 1 time, but as you know there are banks that are competing for your buisiness so this means there could be as many as 10 different inquiries because of the ten different banks that lending tree sent your app to...

Company's that you have applied for direct credit from, as in a loan and company's in which your credit (or lack there of) will be used to determine if they allow you their services without a deposit, like the telephone co. or cable co. are listed in the "inquiries" category. They have "inquired" about your credit.

wizjp
People from whom you have applied for credit; or entities that have permission to get your credit history

RON M
ON any credit report, say one from Exoperian, "inquiries" must be listed.
Inquiries are made by mortgage companies, credit card companies, hire-purchase companies WHENEVER you make an application for a loan, mortgage or other financial arrangement.

These companies must check the validity of your address, credit history, presence or absence of court judgements, existing loan arrangeemnts or any defaults.

Usually, the credit agency will name the "inquirer" and state the outcome, such as "mortgage agreed", or "card declined on this occasion".

Be aware that the credit company can get it "wrong".
Experian in the UK had a credit problem and court action listed for me. This was because a former partner, at a property we jointly own, had gotten into arrears.

It was assumed - wrongly - that I had a "financial relation" to him, when I did not. I had to clarify this by signing a declaration, Experian swiftly corrected it, and I got my mortgage. Apologies all round.

Do not fight or resent the credit agency: work with them.
If you give clear unambiguous amswers and explanantion, they will be co-operative.

If some of the inquiries are ones you do not reconise, contact the credit agency immediately, as someone could be using you details to obtain credit.

Every time you apply for credit and the place where you are applying checks your credit report, an inquiry is placed on your file.

Be careful not to have too many inquiries because some creditors will deny you credit, thinking that you are "credit hungry" or are having financial problems and overloaded in debt.

You also want to pay close attention to this section because if there are inquiries showing up and you have not applied for credit, it is possible that someone is trying to use your identity for purchases/credit.

I hope this helps

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe that refers to other companies inquiring about your credit-worthiness to see whether or not to open an account for you, such as credit card or loan applications. It is standard procedure to perform a credit check anytime you open an account, such as when you get a new cell phone plan, open a retail account, etc. I have been told that if you have over what is considered a reasonable amount of inquiries it can negatively affect your credit score, because it looks like you may be overextending yourself, even if your payment history looks ok. So, if you are trying to improve your credit score for a big purchase, don't do any little new credit transactions for awhile to keep the amount of inquiries down.

Of course, they are supposed to take into account that there might be a series of recent inquiries if you are "shopping" a mortgage or something.

RomeyM
Inquiries are when people go in and run a credit check on you. They can lower your credit score if you have to many of them too.
I just got my credit report too and I had several inquiries from a couple of credit card companies and a lot of car dealerships. I guess they check your credit and then if you qualify that is when they send you those prescreened credit offers in the mail for car loans and credit cards. I would like to know how to get it stopped. I do know there is a way to get them removed from your report but I am not sure how.

They tell what places have looked at your credit report, i.e. - if you apply for a new car loan or credit card, they will check your credit to see what rate you will pay, the better your credit, the lower rate you will pay.

mrliteman001
Inquires have changed in the past couple of years. It used to be only businesses that you are applying for credit with. Now even your auto insurance runs your credit and your rate is determined by your credit score. There are several scouces of credit scores. Experian, Trans union ect......

Most likely applications you've submitted for credit, ie car which is the best example. I've always learned to have a check handy or pre-approval by your own lender (credit union, personal bank) before buying the car. The car dealerships run you credit through "several" companies!

quantumrift
An inquiry is just that: Somebody has asked or inquired about your credit. That might be somebody trying to pre-qualify you for a car loan, mortgage, credit card, etc. Say you go to a furniture store looking to buy $1000 worth of furniture and they pull a check on you prior to you buying..that sort of thing.

It also might indicate, if you have NOT been doing something that would warrant an inquiry, that SOMEBODY is starting to snoop into your credit for identity theft. In either case it is GOOD to know WHO is inquiring and WHY.

An occasional inquiry, if you have been doing things like looking at cars, homes, etc is OK, but if you get like two or more in a short time, beware.

That's why I keep up on my credit report on a monthly basis.

Heather Z
Myhusbands credit went down a couple ponits from those credit envelopes you get in the mail because they ding your credit everytime they send one to you. The ones that say your preapproved...Unfortunetly they can do an inquirie anytime...
