Judy | Only 10% of the card holders have been able to pay in full for the last 12 months? |
Do you really believe this number is so low? |

I could believe 10% didn't and 90 % did. Where did you get that statistic? |

I question the "have been able". I believe that more card holders choose not to pay in full than are unable to pay in full. Example: I pay in full, my husband does not. He pays more than the minimum, but not in full. |

I've had a credit card for almost 2 years, and a second card for almost 1 year, and always pay them in full.
Except when I bought a $550 laptop, I paid for that over 2-3 months. And when I bought $630 worth of plane tickets, I paid that off in, I think about 3 months. I COULD have paid in full, but then my bank account would be very low, if any emergency happened with my car. And I didn't want to put myself in that situation.
So I disagree with that personally. But seeing everyone around me, I definitely agree with that number. Especially my sister who has had an over balance charge every month since she got the card, and the limit is $1k. She finally got it down to just under 800, recently. And it's been like a year. And my older sister almost had to file bankruptcy because she was in so much debt before turning 23. And my mom has 5 kids, 10k limit but rarely reaches past half of that. She doesn't pay it off, I don't think. But I mean she has a big house and 5 kids, with not a very high paying job.
But yes, I always strive to pay off in full. Though people are telling me I'm being irresponsible paying it off in full. They say it hurts my credit score, because companies want to know that I can make monthly payments, not just pay everything off each month. (That made NO sense in my mind. I would prefer the person who pays it off in full rather than pays it off over time!) |

we are a credit society and the "able" may be a bit misleading. The current generation lives and is conditioned for credit. They do not think if they can afford it, they think in terms of the monthly payment.
When my parents wanted to purchase something, they would put money down and put it in layaway. They would not get the item until it was paid for, now yu can walk into bestbuy and get all the latest and greatest and not even make a payment until next year in some cases.
People get into trouble when they think in monthly terms instead of debt terms. everything is ok when you have a job but when you lose it and you need all that money you can get in trouble real fast, it also does not have to be a job loss, sometimes it can get away from you and your wants turn into needs in peoples minds and they end up drowning in debt.
30 years ago these were not needs but people seem to have transitioned them to that column,
cable tv/satellite $50 minimum a month and in most cases more
cell phone - $50 a month but much higher for most people and then add texting....
internet connection - $50 for the home, I am one who sees this as a need, but I could survive without it
New car every 3 years - we have conditioned ourselves to havea car payment and with that lease, you have to carry full coverage and that adds to the bill as well
buying coffee/snacks everyday - My parents had clean cars becasue there car was for driving not eating in. the drivethru was to pick it up and go home to eat, now people use the drive thru daily in their routine for a beverage to drive while going into work where the coffee is free. this also includes the bottled water scam, you are paying $8 a gallon for that water that comes out of someone elses tap.
I am sure you can think of quite a few things more that we all splurge on and that leave us less money to pay out bills.
I suggest doing a cash only month. try to live one month just using cash and you will see where all your money goes, but the upside will be no credit card payment that month. |

Sad to know if that's the case>it's just matter of prioritizing & choice, people tend to buy some vices/extravagant forgetting they have bills to pay.Becoming compulsive buyer even though not thinking he is just using credit card-Borrowed money w/ interest if not paid on time! |

That number sounds too low to me. What is your source?
Several financial news sources have been reporting more people paying off cards monthly in 2008 than in prior years. |

Yes. Many people are having a hard time surviving. It is going to get even worst. It's not the end of the world. We will eventually see good times again.
Good question. |

If you're talking about the percentage of people who have credit cards and pay the full balance each month, then your figure sounds about right.
Many people who have credit cards don't pay their balance each month. A large portion of them only pay the minimum due. This is nothing new. |

10% is only a meaningful number if we know what that number was 24 or 36 months ago. I doubt it was much higher.
We are a debtor society. We are told to buy things and we are told that we must have it now. There is no savings, no buy it when you can afford it. Those things are changing now. Purchases are being put off and the economy is suffering for it. |
