Jojis Momis | Overdraft fee fairness? |
i went shopping the other day i made seven charges on my debit card the seventh charge overdrew me by $42
now i understand that my bank has a $27 fee for an overdraft
but theyre applying the fee to every purchase i made that day! Even though i had the money for 6 of the charges in the bank
thats $27 x 7!!! Almost 200 bucks!!!
is this common practice or do you think i have a fighting chance of getting the 6 charges taken off? |

Banks are notorious for this.
What they do is they count all the withdrawals/debits/checks FIRST, then later they credit deposits.
I don't know how this is legal, but I've had no luck getting any of these fees removed.
I have heard of some that did, though.
I would think your best bet would be to go in person to your branch and give it a shot. Take whatever you have that shows times of purchases. You might get someone feeling generous :)
Good luck! |

You are lucky.
My bank Suntrust is even worse.
They charge $35 for each NSF. After that they charge you $6/day until you pay. If you don't pay within 7 days another $35 nsf and 6/day. And so on and so on.
Call them (800 number), they might remove some fees. Do NOT go to the bank. Those tellers are minimum wage workers that have no permission to make changes to your account.
The 800 managers thinking is that they will get you again in the future. They want to keep customers that keep low balances - they will think you are a profit machine for them. But you will know better.

Yes... that is a common practice. They apply the largest charge to your account first so that the other six each will overdraw your account.
The charges you make don't hit your account in chronological order but a bank will take the largest charge and apply it first.
Only thing you can do is set up a savings account as an overdraft protection device. This way money from your savings account is transferred to your checking account if you start overdrawing your account. This also incurs a fee but it is better to pay a $12 fee to get the money transferred between the accounts instead of getting slapped with a $27 overdraft fee for each charge that puts you past the limit in your account.
You must set this up in person at your bank and get it in writing.
Banks don't do this automatically since they lose a lot of "business" charging you with overdraft fees when you have your own protection plan set up. |

First off it's not fair. The bank does have the right to do that though, unfortunately the paper you signed when you first set your bank account up saying that you would pay the overdraft fees. You can try to fight the charge, i bet the bank would be understanding about the additional fees. In this economy you have some leverage because you could just threaten to find a new bank.
Hope this helped.

~~Online check your running balance and check the order of how they posted the debits. When the account goes in the red, the NSF charges would only apply to the one which overdrew your account and any thereafter.
If you don't have online banking then have a representative explain it to you.
They can only charge you for the debit which overdrew the account and any thereafter. You can dispute any charges with them. You have to visually see what happened before you can make this decision. Best of luck!~~ |

Oh my gosh!! That is messed up!! You need to call corporate and complain. That is not acceptable. Mine charges $15 (Wachovia) for an overdraft fee. I've only had it happen for single purchases so I don't know if mine charges for each charge. |
