Paying by cheque.?
Why do some people when buying their shopping pay by cheque? They still have to produce their debit card to use as a guarantee so what is the advantage? It can't just be to hold up the queue.

I like to pay by cheque as I can keep all my spending records together as I usually lose the receipts they give when I use my debit card. Also, I'm not a fan of chip and pin as I don't think it's as safe as they say it is so at least when I use a cheque I have to sign for it and the staff have to check it, they don't bother to even look at the name on a debit card before asking you to put in your PIN. I know this because I've used my husband's card before as I know his PIN and nobody batted an eyelid.
It's not people that pay by cheque that hold up the queue anyway, it's those that insist on packing every single item before attempting to find their purse!!

my daughter only pays by cheque in the supermarket because she has no money in her account and she knows that by the time the cheque is cleared that there will be sufficient funds in to cover the cheque.

some people are just behind the times or maybe dont know that they can pay by chip and pin.

Maybe they do it, as it takes a few days to clear? So if they are waiting to be paid or for something to clear in their account, they won't go overdrawn?

Most of the big shops have stopped allowing cheques now. The idea of paying by cheque is that it takes longer to clear thus allowing you to transfer funds in time. Debit card is debited immediately. Having worked in a supermarket i know for sure the longest transactions are by card and cheque- cash is so much quicker.

paying by cheque is easier to keep an eye on whats been spent, but most shops are now refusing cheques as payments even with the guarentee card,

The vast majority of stores do not now accept cheques in payment. Not all the cards shown were debit cars, Some were just cheque guarantee cards with no other function. But as I have said ,it should not be a problem in the future. Cheques as such are on the way out and will not continue for much longer.

I live in Ireland and Its a very very very long time since I saw anyone paying for their shopping with a cheque.. Very outdated in Ireland anyway..

I think it is so they have a few days grace before the cheque clears to get the cash into the bank but i know my local Asda and Tescos dont accept Cheques now so i think it is being phased out now due to chip n pin.

SusieQ
I think, the sooner cheques are phased out ,the better. Chip and pin is so quick now and our system no longer prints cheques, therefore, the customer has to write them.
By the time the cheque is written and the stub filled in, I can serve 2 customers on our other till. I DO apologise but add that I am trying to keep the queue down.

Some people do not have debit cards, a lot of older people especially. All they've ever had are checks and that is why they always use them. I've never seen someone use a debit card as a guarantee... that doesn't make any sense, some people don't have debit cards at all. They may have to show their drivers license perhaps, but not a debit card.
