People are so shallow these days?
if you met someone and you truly got along with this person and yo could laugh and be yourself, and then you found out how much they made each year, and it was not a lot AT ALL....would this change your opinion on the person?would you think different of them?

It's a lot more fun to be poor when you're young then when you're old.

Money shouldn't have anything to do with friendships.
BUT...
Often it's the psychological aspect. The one with more money tends to feel a little more self-assured and independant. They start to explore more areas that they weren't able to before. They start to make new friends and in doing so, discover new interests. They move to more expensive neighborhoods and the old friendships tend to drift apart.

I think it's a lot less about money, and a lot more about opportunities.

No way! Thats soo mean! It doesnt matter how much money they make what matters is their personality!

wei_bei_li

Heck no! My husband makes way more money than any of my friends and we get along great! I'm not shallow and they're not envious! It takes two to make a relationship work!

NO. I will still be their friend.

One of my best trusting friends doesnt make much money.

I have got friends who are unemployed and broke, and they are the best people you could find, they would do anything for me, even though they have nothing themselves, having lots of money dosent mean that you are a better person.

reallyfedup
I agree. I have met some guys that I shared many things in comon with and we had great conversations and all but they wouldn't consider me as girlfriend material because I didn't have a big paying job.

no.. not at all

i was kind of in a similar situation.. i had a homegirl that was real cool.. but she used to always talk about how her husband better be making six figures.. and she wants at least a $30k ring when she gets married.. blah blah blah.. it kinda made me feel insecure.. i understand that she knows what she wants.. and i admire her for that.. but there's more to a man than just how much money he makes

Laissez-Faire Guy
I blame our consumer culture. Don't get me wrong. I think our enormous wealth and economic development is largely due to it, but it does tend to make us shallow.

We've been sold a bill of goods to think things will give us happiness, but they only give us fleeting happiness. Prevoius generations knew that happiness was derived from family, friends, activities, doing good for others, rewarding work, etc. I didn't really learn this lesson until my mid-30's.

People generally do poorly economically for 3 reasons:
1. They make poor choices.
2. They've had unanticipated events happen to them
3. They deliberately chose careers that are not economically rewarding.

I would only lose respect for those who made the poor choices and did not learn anything from them.

As for the others, I would continue to enjoy their company, and offer to pick up the tab once in a while.
