Yes, there are many of us who would appreciate a few extra dollars in the bank. I know that I would like to be able to save more than what I currently am. What I don't get is the amount of people I see who claim not to be able to afford to put food on the table or buy clothes for their kids, yet they have a computer with internet service. God forbid I ever became that bad off, the computer would be sold, and the internet serivce shut off.

I now people can access computer from other places. I am talking and asking about people that I know, first hand experience. I just dont get it. I use to get off my butt and walk to the library when I didn't have one, and that satisfied me for a long time. I know everyone's situation is different I am asking about the ones that did purchase the brand new dell and spend $25 a month on internet....that is what I dont get. |

Wha? That's insanity! When there is less $$ around, my kids never suffer and I know the meaning of tightening my belt. My biggest eyebrow raiser is that I don't understand how the poor can be overweight. No car = walking, no $ = less food, less junk food, less tv, etc. How, besides depression or disabilities do some manage to maintain their weight? |

I don't get it- I can't help you. When I met my bf he had been laid off from a good paying job and was just about out of savings, yet he had DSL, Cable with HBO, a cell phone and a land line. I tell you- the minute I lost my job, internet, land line, and HBO would be out. Cable following shortly. I don't get how people cry bankrupt when they are paying for unnecessary services. |

People have their sets of priorities, like you if im hard up with money and i hav hungry kids...i will not have a pc or internet service but that's us....other people hav diff priorities in life..and maybe just maybe they need it for job searching ull never know |

Some people like to overexaggerate. Or some just like to lie for people to pity them. But mostly people don't have their priorites set. I mean I believe they have a computer ( some jobs give them to their workers) but internet... Thats a little to hard to believe. |

You are assuming two things: 1) that they actually pay for internet service, and 2) that their computer is not only theirs but worth something.
May people get free AOL. All you have to do is keep calling them to cancel, and they give you 3 free months. A friend of mine got free AOL for two years doing this. I got 9 months before I got sick of calling to cancel and got a great deal on cable internet instead.
Where I live, there are many public places with free wireless access, and the public library has internet service for free. Many people also have internet service at work. People also have friends and neighbors who will allow them to use their computer. Many schools also have computers.
I used an old crappy computer that I got for free for years until I finally bought a decent one. Selling it would have got me a whole $10, lol. Lots of people get tossed out computers on garbage day or from friends and fix them up enough so that they can use them. People also give away free computers on freecycle all the time.
If I didn't have a computer and internet service, I could still get online quite easily for free ... at work, at the library, at my friends house, at the employment office, etc ...
People beg for money on here all the time, but I do think you are assuming too much when you blame their computer and internet access for their money woes. |

OOOH i am so with you on this one. I wonder the same thing. $50 cable bill, 2 cell phones and such i don't get it i wonder the same thing on a reg.. and me I'm like I will cut the cable off and Pu the hose phone on lifeline cut all the unnecessary crap. People try to keep up with the jones at any expense. so sad the kids have to suffer. |

i don't get it either i have come to the conclusion that they are just dumb. my friend is always complaining that she is poor and has no money, that she wishes that she could afford to do things with us. and yet she just spent half of her savings on a brand new sidekick phone just to use for texting and internet, but she's still keeping her old phone (that had all the features of the sidekick) to call people. talk about dumb. |

Truthfully, I think that as humans, we get used to certain 'luxuries' in life. When we're making enough, these things aren't really seen as luxuries...just basic essentials... when you lose the job or start to get broke, you're so used to owning those things that you've come to see them as necessaties... I guaratee that if the Internet service gets shut off, it probably won't get turned back on for a while... getting rid of the computer, on the other hand?... Sheesh. That might take a while... you? That'd be a major sacrifice... and for what? A used computer will bring in all of $400 (at the very most). Then you pay the electric bill, buy some food, and the money's gone. When you do start to have money again, you have to think about buying a new PC.... I guarantee it'll cost you a lot more than you sold yours for, too!...
I think that rather than sell the computer and getting a VERY temporary solution, I'd keep the PC, get a job (I don't care what...just something to bring money in, shoot, there's even welfare.), and get my Internet Service back. |

As one person mentioned there are a number of different places computerless people can access the Internet. Public library being the big one. Work. Friend or family.
I was laid off (twice) earlier this year and each time I started to sell house junk like a madman on ebay. Didn't make a mint, but enough to supplement unemployment.
I would also cut unecessary luxuries if things got bad, but I have no kids so I don't mind starving myself for cable or computer. (just kidding) ;) |

There are lots of people out there who are very bad money managers. They are always broke no matter the income.
As far a poor people being overweight, times have changed. Today some of the least healthy and fattening food is the cheapest. |

they might not be using their own computer, with their own internet service..... I don't have a computer or the internet at home, but I have them both at work. i come on when i'm not busy at work, or i'm on break/lunch. There are other ways that us poor people can get on the internet. The library also lets you get on the internet for free. |
