Poll- How much do you think you have to make per hour to live independently?
How much do you think you'd have to make per hour, to be able to live on your own, and not be in debt?

In most of the U.S. a median wage is $12/hour.

That is enough to live on if you don't get sick.

That is not enough to grow on and not enough to start a family even if both members of a couple work.

Wages are higher in cities, but the buying power of the average couple, i.e. what you can buy which is a better index than wages/inflation/estimated cost of living, has been decreasing for many years.

Unless you start out at a really good rate right out of school, you will retire with only slightly higher buying power than you start out with.

$15 and you can survive, $20 and you can enjoy stuff, $25 and you can enjoy stuff and save for retirement

It depends on where you live, but I think at least $15 an hour... and that would be living with bare minimum.

I think that you would have to make at least $12 per hour to live independendently these days. But I also know that it's not how much you make, but how you spend your money that makes the differents.

It depends alot on where you want to live.
But I would say you could safely live on $10.00 an hour for one person. You should be able to find a studio apt for that wage. To get yourself into a better situation where you can actually save something each week, I would guess at atleast $13.00 an hour. I live in Upstate NY and that is what we would need to be ok here.

I make about 20 and hour - and after my health insurance and student loan (250) I still dont have enough to live on my own....
and I assure you, I do not have an extravagent lifestyle. I drive a beater, rarely buy clothes, etc.

Liberalism is a lie!
I think that's a vague question because it depends on what your definition of "independent" is. If you want to live like a king on a jesters salary, you will go into debt with lenders like mortgage brokers, credit card companies etc. Be realistic and match your lifestyle to your income.

Vanilla
It depends where you live. And what you start out with... Do you have a car already paid for? How much is your rent? Is the city or town where you live expensive?

balderarrow
And not be in debt? A lot. I make very good money, but I'm still in debt. Live at home while you can.

Its not really how much you make. Its pretty much how you budget your money. You have to live within your means no matter how much you make.

It's not how much you make per hour, it's how much you make overall. Back when I was single and living in a shared house, I could live easily on AU$150 a week. I wouldn't recommend moving out if that's all you earn, because I was putting aside $200 each week. That was used to save up for new shoes, emergencies and most importantly, holidays!! I think you can move out on $250 per week. Any less than that, you can't be confident you won't have to go crying back home to mum. You don't want to do that, going from freedom to "my house my rules" wouldn't be nice!

If you know how to budget and are willing to stick with it, oh, and don't live in an expensive area, then $10 an hour is good. My husband and I lived on $12 an hour, had two cars paid for, a small personal loan and he was the only one working! We were in Vancouver Washington and paid $550 in rent for our own place.
You can make it work if you're smart and budget budget budget!!

I_color_outside_the_lines
around 22.00 an hour and that's IF you don't have a car payment or student loans to pay off.

Grasshopper, the question better asked is not how much, but how many.
The answer: Four hours per week.
The amount: more than enough.
Check out my source! Think outside the box and you can do it.

You're not perfect either

Depends on where you live. The first time on my own, I was only making $8 an hour. I was barely able to get by. I had a car payment as well so that made it extra hard. My rent was only $300 a month, but the place was a dump. Rent=300, car pymnt=285, car ins.=150, plus utilities. most of my paycheck was gone on payday and forget being able to save money for the future or buy anything except necessities.
I recommend living at home as long as possible and put back some savings for emergencies before even thinking about being on your own.

That depends on how many hours you want to work. I know a factory worker who makes more than I do because he works over 100 hours per week (he basically just comes home to sleep).

So, it's not all about hourly wage. It's about wage, hours worked, benefits, and how well you keep what you earn and don't blow it all like an idiot.

in this world? at least 25 dollars an hour!!!!

This is a question that needs more variables. You can actually live quite comfortably on minimum wage in a place like Buffalo, New York where rent is as low as $200 per month. However, minimum wage in California would pretty much drive you into debt.

This is what you should figure when trying to estimate if you can live on your own or not. Rent should be no more than 60% of what you make. The other 40% can cover food, bills, gas, and everything else as long as you watch your money.

So, to figure out how much you would need in your area safely, look at what the rent would be for a place where you would like to live. Then take that rent amount and multiply it by 2, which would give you a 50% ratio (a safer number). Whatever number you come up with, is basically how much you would need to make to live independently. For example, if you're rent is $500 a month, you would want to make $1,000 a month to live comfortably. Of course, you could still live on far less then the extra $500 above rent, but you'll have more fun if you can figure double.

Hope this helps.

About $32.57 an hour.
