It sometimes beats me where some people get their information from ! - Your minimum initial purchase is £100 up to a max of £30,000, and for EACH £1 you get a unique bond number (albeit they now come in blocks). Each number goes into the monthly "draw" and can win anything from £50 to £1million (after a short qualifying period of up to two months), and this draw is instead of interest. The idea is that your initial investment always remains the same (but of course will usually drop in value over the years) but is always there should you require the money.
All CORRECT details can be found on the NS&I site - Not wiki which has been 'got at' so many times as to be practically useless.

Some people swear by them.Prizes are all tax free and there
are a range of prizes up to a million pounds.I bought two hundred
pounds worth some years ago but no letter dropped through
the door yet with cheque

for every pound you put into a premium bond you get a unique number. i think your first bond investment must be £100 then you can buy more bonds each month but one person cant hold more than £30,000. once a month a computer randomly picks out numbers to win various cash prizes ranging from £50 to £1 million. a list of prize winners is available on line each month. the bonds can be cashed at any time. i would say bonds are more suitable if you have a large wedge to invest as when you look at the larger cash winners most of them hold the full £30,000 limit. dont let this put you off though as i had a bond as a child and over 18 years it grew to £450 winning 4 small prizes. the only catch is that they dont earn intrest as this makes up the large number of prizes. its a way of keeping your money safe with a relatively high chance of winning cash prizes. basically if you can afford a little extra to put into a bond its secure and you could win big. i think the odds of winning a million on the bonds are actually higher than the lottery itself.

Simple, you buy bonds for minimum £100 it then go's into a monthly draw for small winnings up to one million.
The bonds cannot be transfer ed.They will be yours only.
I have had mine for over thirty years and only won twice £50 and £10,not much is it?
My aunt bought my first one as she was a great saver ,she had her's longer then mine, she died over twenty years ago, they still have her bonds but she still never won anything.
It really is a lottery. Good Luck

I bet this is a record. I have had Premium Bonds for 40 years next April and never won a single penny. Good luck to you tho'

They are lousy value for money and like everything ever offered by British governments, especially labour ones, cleverly designed to take money from the poor and give it to the rich. Consider:

Prem.bonds pay interest in the form of monthly prizes average 3.75%pa tax free. This amounts to gross rates of:

3.75% if you are too poor to pay standard rate inc.tax,
4.8% if you pay standard rate tax and
6.25% if you pay super tax

Need I say more?

I buy post office premium bonds and they are not a good way of saving money, because it's just about luck. You will not llose anything but you may never win. I twice won £100...
One more thing: winners always seems not to live in London!!
Advise: Do invest a few hundreds, you may get lucky, but if you want to invest a large sum get a high interest saving account.

A quick search on the topic indicates that premium bonds are like government treasury bills except, instead of paying interest to the holder, the interest goes into a prize pool, and is subsequently awarded by lottery.

This does not seem like a good way to save money, given that your odds of cashing in are likely to be small.

they are ok if you get a big win on ernie (there machine that draws the numbers) you cant cash them in any more and i think the minimum you can buy now is 100 pounds
look at www.nationalsavings.co.uk

Premium Bonds, do offer you a great way to save, but with no interest, but for every ten pound you have a number which goes in a monthly draw ...which gives you a chance to win downwards of 1 million.
I,ve only got £100 i,ve had for 3 years ...only won £10.00, but its also the only savings accounts i have never taken the money out of in times of need.
Our numbers can be checked on the internet, but they will send the money on even if you dont realise, they do have millions on unclaimed winning, where people have moved address and not informed them. I recently checked my grandfathers online and found he won £50. ten years ago..still got the money
