Proper method for writing checks?
For those of you who still write paper checks for making a payment, who inserts on the line that ends with "Dollars", ONLY the WRITTEN form of the numbers inserted above with the $ sign. In other words, no digits are to be entered on the line where the word "Dollars" appears as that is redundant. You have already used the figures on the line above. The financial institution where the check clears verifies the correct amount of a check by what is "written" on the dollars line.
Additional Details
As stated in my question, "who".

I use bill pay mostly now, but there are those rare occasions when I HAVE to use a check... e.g. Recently a Dental Office sent me a bill via snail mail, and I was told that I MUST send them their dumb bill coupon with my payment back to them for their crazy archaic record keeping...

So the amount was $65.46.
I wrote the following:

Sixty-five dollars and 46/100 ONLY --------------------------

Yes, that is EXACTLY the way I wrote out my check ... including the ONLY and the -------------------------------

Why? Because I'm a paranoid freak who isn't about to get jacked by others who may change the check amount on me! You know, you never can trust them dental folks!!! J/K LOL.

I do this because that's the way my dad does his checks, and he's the one who taught me when I was about 16 years old and now it's become habit. Improper method it may be, but my banks don't seem to mind!

Besides, I'm far too lazy to write out the cent amount all out!!!

Your ?? isn't really clear. Are you asking is you are suposed to write the numerals above ($______) & spell out the numbers below (________ dollars)?
If that is your question then yes... that is how you are suposed todo it. It is for clarification in case one of the lines can't be read. In most contracts they do the same thing. i.e. $5.95 (Five dollars and NinetyFive cents).

Ren
Not I
I spell out the dollars (but don't use the word dollar), but I get lazy with the cents. So 55cents is 55/100. I don't think I write small enough to spell out the cents.

Rae
What exactly is the question here?

EDIT: After looking at your additional information.... I completely fill out a cheque. I do write in on both lines the amount I am giving, once in numbers, once spelled out. I didn't learn this from a class at all. In fact, I have yet to take a class that has anything to do with personal finance. I learned this when I got my first bank account when I was about 15, and my mother showed me.

Hope that helps!

You are only required to write the dollar amount and not the cents on the written amount line. They would not verify or reject a check for not writing out the cents amout.

i think the answer you want is the 'issuer'.

Where's the question?

Does it REALLY bother you that people are redundant when writing checks? If it really makes you lose sleep, you really need to get a life. Go out! Go see a movie! Go on a cruise! Do something.

As long as the check goes through, most people couldn't care less whether "dollar" was mentioned twice.
