farfromhome | REALLY OLD Bank Accounts? |
My hubby recently found his passbook for a savings account he had when he was a nipper. It was not exactly flush, but what are the odds its still open and been collecting interest for twenty years? Can a bank close an account thats in credit due to lack of activity???? |

Check with the bank, but most will charge inactivity fees of up to $5 per month. |

They can't at the moment, but the law is about to change so that they can close old bank accounts, and pool the money.
Get appropriate ID and get down there soon. |

no..they cant keep your money. go and see them - but you will need LOADS of identity to prove that it is yours...they might even have to send the book of to get it sorted..but the money is rightfully yours...however much it is! |

i once found an old post office bank book,I gave it to the post master at the time after about two weeks I received a new up dated book with the in tersest added it isn't a lot but was able to get to use the new pass book for a few years be for cancelling,My advice if the bank still exist take the pass book listen to there advice and go from there, nothing to lose,If the bank no longer exist try to find who took over like the former tsb is now Lloyd's tsb .nation bank is now Nat-west also Minster bank, the same .Midland is now part of the hcbc, banks have also taken the roles of former building society's so if you have one look into it |

Yes, some banks make your account inactive if you don't use it for a long time. |

It will still be there. By law, unless the financial institution has had special dispensation by the Treasury, the orphan assets have to be held until they are claimed. In the UK there are some £15 BILLION in unclaimed assets right now!
There may not have been any interest on the money for a while though! That is not obligatory.
My last experience was claiming National Savings Certificates dated Feb 1978 only a month ago. £10 turned into £42 - woo hoo :) |

Yes they can close it out. First, they charge you inactivity fees, and then once the account gets so low, they can close it out. It all depends on the bank's policies though so I would definitely checl into that. |

Yes they can and do close accounts for non-activity. It takes years, but they can't maintain the account forever; especially if there was no money in it. |
|

Hey you
 |
No they cant, go to the bank and draw out the money- its your money. |
