Should I demand my money back from my parents?
I am now 18 and have been working since I was 14 (In markets as a Saturday job) and since I turned 16 I have a job in Tesco and had jobs in other large chains. I have paid my digs since I started working of £40 a week.

Even though I have been paying my digs my parents keep asking for money for the mortgage, electric, council tax, and to pay for their cars (Both on credit). I gave them the money believing they would pay me back soon.

The money was my savings for university and they know how much I want to go to university but now I can't afford to. They have had OVER £3000 excluding my digs.

Should I ask for this money back or should Acceptt that I have lost it?

I would like to say to all the people that have left answers saying that they fed me a clothed me etc etc that they haven't. My grandparents did most of that till I got my own job which then meant I bought my own clothes and food.

Ha,
Maybe they should ask for all the money back that you have cost them over the years.
That would amount to a heck of a lot more than 3k.

David M
You can ask them for it, but I assume it's spent. Keep in mind that they fed you, clothed you, paid for your medicine and did so many other things for you growing up. They "owe" you nothing. Good luck.

Couldn't you ask to 'borrow' money from them as well??

Don't ask for it back or expect it. But don't help anymore. I mean, if they are able to work and don't, you shouldn't throw away your education because they are irresponsible.

Did you lend it to them on the understanding that they would return it one day? If not don't hold you breath getting it back but there's no harm in asking.

Next time they ask, say you're sorry but you want to save up so you can move out to college.

Good luck.

I'm very sorry this situation has occurred - you sound like a good daughter and a hard worker. I have a 16 year-old daughter who works weekends and goes to school and the way we do it is she saves half for her future and spends half of her weekly income.

From what you say it doesn't seem as if you had any concrete agreement and although as a parent I don't quite understand their actions as you tell it, I would say you've pretty much "lost" the money, although there's no harm in very politely mentioning that you'd like to get some of the money back in time for uni.

From now on there need to be clear rules about what you pay for and what your parents pay for so perhaps you should get something on paper. Sit down with them and work out a fair weekly or monthly payment.

I hope this helps - the last thing you want to do is fall out with your family :-)

No, I wouldn't ask for it back.

They have spent a hell of a lot more on you than you have on them.

Learn a lesson from it, don't lend people money.

livelovelaugh7
uhm yeaaaa u worked hard for it

buildypuss
you know deep in your heart that they haven't got it.

oh, i see....
explain that you need you money for school. and see what they say. if they don't have a lump sum, maybe you could work out a monthly payment. if you did not have them sign a contract and it was just a verbal agreement, it would be hard to prove what the agreement was. since, it would be your word against your parents. if they refuse to give it to you, you may have lost your money and also respect for your parents. good luck

Whatever You Like
Yeah! That was YOUR money, not theirs! You ere kind enough to let them use it when needed but now YOU need it!

tylerr<3
You could.

but think of all the things they've bought you in the past?

WelshLad
Personally just think of all the money they spent on you since you were a baby.

If you think about it by helping them pay the mortgage, you kept a roof over your head as well as theirs. By helping with the council tax, you prevented them going to court. By helping them pay for electric, you wouldn't have electric, which I presume you use everyday and depend it.

Accept that you've lost it

They seem mean to you. I would much rather give to my daughter than take from her. I can't see you getting your money back. If they behave in such a way, their circumstances will never change, and they'll be asking for more. Spendthrifts never stop frittering money. You might ask for a proportional share of the house, and do it legally. That way they couldn't disinherit you out of it all, but it would be a long term solution. I don't suppose you have anything in writing about the loans, like IOUs? Even if you did, would you be prepared to fight a legal battle to get it back, with all the hassle involved with that? I don't suppose they have the money anyway. I doubt there will be enough in their next wage packets to cover what they owe you.
I suppose £40 a week is a low amount to cover all your living costs. What exactly do you get for this? Everything except food and clothes? And how does it compare to your earnings? Perhaps you could increase that a bit, and tell them no more loans. And mean it.

Beau.Gus
Let's see, Rent at £30 a month for 14 years is £5040, food for 14 years is roughly £15,120, clothing amounts to about £28,000....

Add that up and you still owe them roughly £50,000, so take out your £3000, move out, and just pay them the balance of £47,000. With interest for 14 years at, let's say, 4%. you only owe them about £350,000

LOZ
man thats bad!!!

dnt your parents work or have they been made redundent??

if they work then they should pay themselves but if they are financial trouble they should ask you proberly that they are in trouble could you help us out?

and they also need to be cutting back on stuff like expensive food and not going out as much!!!

if they are honestly in trouble then i would help them out but i would also ask for money back after the debt was cleared.

if they are being lazy about it like not payin what so ever then i would say no - do it your self.

i work for my mom and iv had to give up my job for her to carry on payin for her household but i do have bros and sister too so im doing it for them not for my parents having to much crap on finance!!

i would do it only if they are being honest and have learned a lesson from finance.

Yes, you certainly should. There is no need to keep your parents if they cant manage better themselves, they should start be more careful with their money. All the time you are lending them money, they are going to rely on that instead of making sure they can manage themselves. I would begin by asking them for a small amount say you need this or that (whatever) and then do the same thing they have done, ask for more and tell them point blank you need to be repaid for all the money you lent them in the past as you are going to to university. I think you have been more then generous and now the time has come to look out for yourself. Not many young people would have supported their parents as long as you have, and I would tell them this as well. It seems to me they have not been very careful with their income and just relied on your kindness. There is a huge difference between lending parents a bit when they are in dire straight but to keep them for so long, or being used by them is totally different. So be forthright tell them how much they had and now its your live you have to think of. I am a parent myself and although my children gave us some money for their keep until they found their own flat and earned a bit more, I would never of dreamed of asking them for money except for their food and telephone bills. they say children are selfish, well parents can be selfish too. Hope it works out for you

Dont ask for it back just dont lend them anymore. If they ask just say that youve been expecting your money back

That is your money therefore you need to tell them you will be needing it back in time for you to go to the university. Don't make it a big deal and be calm and polite and mature about it so that they know you are serious. If they do not give it back then they are obviously not responsible and I doubt you will take family to court (I wouldn't) so you would just have to let them know how they are in the wrong and if they don't give in then I guess you will have to accept that you lost it. You said you were believing they would pay you back soon, but did they tell you that? If not then to them its like you simply gave the money to them. Just explain you meant to borrow it not give it. Good luck and I hope everything works out.

I would like to edit this after reading some answers, yes your parents fed you, clothed you, bathed you, but you didn't ask to be born so that was their responsibility all along. Do not ever give in to that guilt trip, thats almost like mental abuse if coming from a parent.

Booboo
I think you SHOULD ask for it back, omg parents are supposed to help their kids out not the other way round!
