charliel | Should I file a dispute with ebay, or wait until a week or so into the new year? |
I recently sold my first three items on ebay. The auction ended on the 25th, and I shipped on the 26th. This was clearly a mistake; I have yet to recieve payment from two of these people. Ive sent them one email a day each for the last couple days. no response, no payment, no exuces, nothing. One lives in america, so he by now has his package. The other lives in Canada, and will be getting it soon. Have I been rippped off? what will happen if a dispute is filed. Additional Details Another question: can they give me a bad rating if I dispute them? |

Do not provide a product without receiving cash first! I don't know if those people will pay you or not but most people will. Look at their ratings and see if their rating is close to 100%. If it is then they will more than likely pay you as they obviously care what their rating is... I am sorry that this has happened to you and you may never get payment. If they have sent payment through the mail you will have to wait a week or so to receive it. I happen to like Pay-pal as it is instant most of the time! Good luck using e-bay and don't give up just because of these first three items. You will learn a lot about business by using the e-bay site!
Charlie, they may give you a bad rating but I doubt that they will. Be as curtious and professional as you can to your customers and you will do well. If you do something wrong do not hesitate to apologise and make it right with your customer. Remember that you will be dealing with people that are understanding and possibly not understanding. In the feedback section there is also a place to leave a comment if somebody has given you a poor rating. I have looked at these and have understood where the buyer/seller was comming from in their transaction that caused the disputes. I hope this helps! |

Question: why did you send it before you go payment?
BIGGEST lesson: ALWAYS make sure that you get payment AND IT CLEARS before you send it.
I would keep contacting them and then file disputes, but I would give them eactly 2 weeks from when the auction ended. |

i'd give them a little more time, but i'm afraid you learned the hard way like i did. i sold a printer and shipped it out before i got payment and the buyer never paid, and ignored my emails and even a letter i sent. I had to file an unpaid item dispute with ebay to recover my money i was due. But you do have to wait a minimum amount of time before they will let you file, not sure what that time period is but i think its like a week to 10 days maybe. Now i make sure they pay me before i ship anything to them. good luck. |

Unfortunately, you had to learn a hard lesson...
#1: Always wait until payment has been received before sending your merchandise.
#2: If payment was made by check, be sure the payment has cleared your bank before sending the item (this can take up to 10 days).
What to do now? Ebay allows 7 full days for the buyer to make good and send you the payment. If you try to dispute prior to the 7 day waiting period, Ebay will alert you and advise you to retry on the date the waiting period has expired.
If your payment options dictate that you accept PayPal only, you can dispute through PayPal as well.
The downside is, that neither Ebay, nor PayPal can force the buyer to pay. They will both send a notice to the buyer, but if the buyer elects to "blow off" any correspondences or demand for payment, there's not much recourse other than legal proceedings which is likely to be more costly than the item(s) you sold. That's the disadvantage of online sales unless you have a business and conduct sales through your website.
When you sell on Ebay, they give you the option as a seller to restrict certain individuals from bidding on your item. For example: You might say "Anyone with 2 or more negative feedbacks may not bid" or "Anyone with no feedback must contact seller prior to bidding" then Ebay will block those people from bidding if they don't meet your criteria. You may want to dictate these terms in your auctions as well.
I realize this isn't the answer you were looking for, but now hopefully now you have a better idea of how to proceed in the future.
Ebay isn't all bad; lots of people have made a good 2nd income on Ebay. But it's up to you to dictate your terms. Check out Ebay's seller's community for more help in succeeding in the future.
Best of Luck To You! |

Why did you ship without payment? |

Never EVER send product before payment... If you accept personal checks, do not ship product till it clears your bank... Lots of good people out there, but lots of scammers, too... I have had problems on e-bay, and they are not much help settling things for you...Do not depend on them to sort it out for you... Write the people involved and give them a specific amount of time to rectify their situation, then if they don't, give them negative feedback and let others know to beware... Good Luck |

If payments for those items haven't cleared by Wednesday, report them as non-paying bidders. Since you shipped the items before payment was received, you are out of luck if the buyers choose not to pay. |

i would send an e-mail to your buyers telling them you plan on fileing a dispute within 24 hours, then do so if they don't pay. i can't tell you what happens in a dispute, but I do know I tried to file one with both paypal and ebay when i didn't receive an item I purchased and I was informed that it was too late to file a dispute (I believe you have 30 days but I would do so asap to ensure that there is time). |

You shouldn't have shipped anything without first receiving payment. But since you already did, maybe you should wait until after the holidays and see if they will send you the payment. If not, file a dispute on eBay. You could also try to contact the buyer via e-mail.
Good luck! |

Firstly, you boned up by sending the packages before receiving payment. Perhaps you'll learn in the future. You can rate those people poorly for now and file a dispute with Ebay IMMEDIATELY! I'm not sure the extent they'll go against those deadbeats, but you'll probably be open to legal action against them. |
