I believe you should take it back. When I was a retail manager, our company had a policy that if a drawer was under by more than a certain amount, the cashier had to pay it back. I know banks work that way as well.
You have knowingly taken money that does not belong to you, that is called stealing. If you take it back and the manager there tells you to keep it, only then is it yours to keep.
No store is going to give you extra cash for making you wait. If they did, then that store would quickly go out of business. A local grocery store once offered a $1 coupon if you were further back in line than third and they didn't open another register. That was ten years ago, and they stopped it because it was costing too much, so giving $10 cash is never going to happen. That was a mistake. |

Think about this: It is not unusual for checkers to be docked the amount they come up short. Would you take $10 from someone deliberately? If not, why would you think it was okay to keep the money accidentally given to you? Is it wrong to steal from individuals or small stores, but right to steal from large ones? You were aware of the mistake, and you made a conscious decision to keep what did not belong to you. |

Reverse the situation. You're a cashier in a store, probably making minimum wage (or somewhere around there). As a result of this mistake your drawer is short at the end of the day. Maybe it's your first mistake, maybe not. Some stores might require you to make up the shortage from the drawer, or you may be terminated for making this mistake
If that doesn't make you think twice - how about you knowingly just took someone elses money. Sometimes it seems easy to rationalize that a store won't miss it. But, let's face it, you know it's wrong or you wouldn't be asking hte question. |

I would not feel guilty because I would not have taken the money in the first place. It is not my money for the taking.
Taking the money is equivalent to grabbing money from the the cash register when the cashier is distracted. |

You should feel guilty. The checker made a simple mistake. You realized that she had made a mistake and took it anyway. That is stealing and with intent. If you can rationalize out stealing as OK, then steal something big. This makes you look sleezy too. |

Man, just give it back. You know it's the right thing to do. Get into the mode of doing what's right all of the time. Of course nobody's perfect. But the more things you do right the better off you'll be in the long run. Say you didn't realize it until you got home. That way at least you get to be naughty by lying. Give it back. |

If you didn't feel any guilt you wouldn't be questioning whether or not to return the money. It's your personal decision and an issue of whether you'll comfortably sleep at night knowing the situation. A cashier's innocent mistake, and your willfully taking the money knowing of the mistake equals dishonesty. My Dad would walk miles to return a quarter to someone who dropped it on the ground. |

They sometimes do that when you have to wait.
That happened to me when the cashier had to go to another register and take care of something that had nothing to do with me. I got cash back on my debit card and later saw that she gave me $10 extra. |
