I currently own 2 SUVs that get 17/21 fro mileage. We have 3 1/2 years left on both loans. B/c of increasi- $1ng gas prices and the drop in SUV resale we owe more than its worth. I was thinking of getting a used honda or mazda 4 cyl. b/c there mileage is 24/35. If I trade in I will have to put up $4000 - $6000. This would drop my monthly payment by approx $100 - $150 per month. Not including the gas I would save. I drive 72 miles round trip to work. So, So I trade in or stick it out for 3 more years. |

Lets see if I understand your situation...in order to get rid of the suv, you'd have to shell out $5000 more, but you say you would also reduce your monthly payment by say $125 (for sake of arguement). The return on that $5k investment would be (125/5000)*12 or aboot 30%. If those numbers are good, then its a no brainer. |

Buy a small, older used car for about $2K. Stay with Honda, Acura, Mazda, Nissan or Toyota. Check consumer reports to find the "Best Buys".
Do not buy a domestic used car. (except Honda) |

Do the financially sound thing. Save more money per month and put it away in an interest bearing secure place. |

Yes, get the new Honda Civic. Mine gets 39 miles per gallon. Don't get the coupe, get the four door. I have the coupe because it's very sporty, but if you are looking for space, the 4 door would be best. It's awesome on gas.
I'm actually thinking about trading in my car for the new Pilot because I want more room in my car when I travel with friends. |

yes, but if your going to spend the money, I would get something even more fuel efficient. Like a hybrid toyota carery EPA est 40 MPG, I own one 36 MPG actual. Or a prius, which is cheaper and gets EPA est 60 MPG. My close friend has one and gets 56-58 acual. Much better fuel iffincency. I would buy a fuel efficient car if not for the enviorment, for the savings. |

Sounds like a no brainer. Gas isn't going to get any cheaper (not much anyway).
I would wait a few weeks though...interest rates willl be coming down more yet. |
