Should an 18 year old guy keep saving his money or spend it?
im 18, and i will have roughly 2000 dollars saved up come march 18th.

now, the thing is, its taken me a while to get there. my job at kmart has cut my hours tremendously and it sucks paying cell phone bill and gas, and gym memberships. then i have 2 old cars that im working on, old rat rods, and i spend a lot of money on those fixing them up...

well.... im starting college in the fall of 08 at a local college, shouldnt cost more than 3,000 to go for like 2 or 3 years. but i think i'll get a scholarship or grant or something..

so. i have 2000 bucks saved up. i havent bought anything i really WANT since i dont know when! i really would like an LCD HDTV, and a playstation 3. (and a new job!) but cant buy that... but yea those would set me back at least 1200, 1300 maybe. should i spoil myself this once? or no... keep saving till 4,000?

Now let me tell you from MY experience. I started saving when I was your age, 18. I am now 21 and graduating college this December. I have almost $5k in my savings account.

For one thing, I did buy a flat screen tv, bought a washer and dryer, did some body work on my car, and went to Las Vegas. When I did these things, I tried to pay as much as I could with my money in my savings account, but for what I couldn't put money up for immediately, I took it out of savings, with the idea that I would "pay my savings back" as soon as I could. I worked hard all through college and now feel very confident entering the world with a bit of handy cash.

Also, I invested all but around $400 into a 6-month CD (certificate of deposit). They earn a lot better interest than just a regular savings account. Then after the 6 months, I dumped more money in a new 6 month CD minus the $400 I left in my regular savings account for a rainy day. I kept doing this every 6 months, and let me tell you, it has worked out great. I am earning $200 extra dollars a YEAR just buy putting my money aside in a CD. I recommend this to you.

I cannot urge you enough to keep saving. You will never regret it. But also, if there really is something that you desperately want, give yourself some leeway. You are only young once. But, be realistic. If it is something that will provide you with a lot of use, get it. (I guess I can't say that about my Vegas trip, but it was my 21st birthday) But anyways, keep saving. Forget about the money, and one day, you will be very surprised!

Good luck!!

ZAK ATTAK
SAVE SAVE!! please SAVE

Don't be like me and blow your money on dumb stuff...

I so wish I had saved my money, I am only starting now... I've worked for 2 years come July and have nothing to show for it...

Most of the stuff I've bought I don't even use or care about anymore... (actually my weakness is CD's... I can easily blow 50-100 bucks in a music store)

DON'T BE LIKE ME, lol

Keep saving you can't even support yourself yet. The next few years you need to get educated with the least loans you can get, set up housekeeping, start an emergency fund. Start saving to retire, get married buy a first house and have babies. A playstation or TV bought ahead of all the other goals will not help you at all.
You don't even know if you will get grants or scholarships to help with college so not a good time to spend your life savings.

Keep saving mate. and congratulations on sticking to your goals. Check out what compound interest can do for you, it takes about 10 years to start happening but when it does it gets better each year after that. And always try to spend your money on things that will return more money to you in the future. i.e Books on how to make money building websites, or hotrods, or bla de blah what ever youre into....... spend your loot on things that can help you to make more money.

htinhausa
save it
the best thing you can do

save it, save it should always trump spending it until you have a successful job, and a stable lively hood, believe me, in college you will need it for emergencies of all sorts, most likely, better safe then sorry!

OMG!! SAVE!! INVEST!!! DO NOT SPEND!!! Seriously, your life in the future, whether you are rich or in debt, totally depends on what you do RIGHT NOW!! Even if you only have a little money right now, you are probably thinking "theres not much I can do with 4g anyway, whats that going to matter in the future??" but TRUST ME, it will!!! You could be rich when you're older and when you have your own family if you make wise decisions RIGHT NOW!!!

rosepro
Save it save it!! Spend your money on education. not TOYS You will be glad you did later. Then when you can afford it and if you still want them you can afford MORE toys!!!
Good luck in college!!

Be wise, save and invest. Be above others your age. Don't buy dumb music, ect.

A while back I saw a young kid spending $60 at Best Buy for stupid CD's and I scolded him right in the check out line.

Keep saving your money or you will wish you would have! But, you could buget to save half and spend half or something to have a separate account for toys.

I know when your out with family and friends you will see things that you like and say you want it. But save up for something that will do you good. Maybe save up for a car, laptop..Something that will do you good long term.

I say this and that

Just treat your savings account like a bill and pay it every month. My wife and I have been doing it for 35 years and it still works.

Keep saving. College expenses will surprise you, community college or not. Go NOW to your college financial advisor and get some info about submitting paperwork on the grants and scholarships, you'll have to work to get them! It does not sound like you have any idea of the real costs for college yet. BTW you can get cheaper textbooks online and save a lot over the school bookstore.
Anyway, your "luxuries" are the gymn membership the cell phone and the fun cars. If you can budget a percentage to go to all of those things and MAYBE another percentage for the LCD HDTV you can save specifically for those things. Or maybe reduce the cell phone/gymn/car budget... Sorry, no, don't blow all your hard work and $$$ that you have now, save a percentage till you can afford it. You've obviously worked hard to get that much put away, shows good judgement and discipline!

If I were in your shoes I would hold on to my money. I would wait until you were in a little bit better of a financial position (4,000 sounds good) before you make a large purchase like that.

If there is ever an emergency you will be glad that you have $2,000 instead of $700 and a new PS3 and a LCD TV.

Jeff
If you lost the Kmart job completely, would you be able to hold out for 6 months while you find another job?

If not, then save the cash.
If so, you can spend the extra.

missc
of course the smart thing to do is save...but if you really want this stuff it definitley sounds like you've earned it. If you don't buy it now when you do have the money your funds are going to run out on random stuff like gas and bills and that's when your really going to want to kick yourself in the face for not getting it. But who cares what we think, DO WHAT YOU WANT.

Find ways to spend that 2000$ so you can make more money.
I made my mistake of spending my money when I get them. Now that I am older, if saved up all my money instead of spending them all, I would have enough for a down payment for a house!. No exaggeration. Thats how much teenager can spend.

My suggestion, find ways to use that 2000$ to make more money. Imagine yourself having 20000$, you can buy whatever you want. Take that an extra mile up to 40000$ for a brand new car, or a house.

Well the decision is still yours, all it comes down to is would you like to work for other people, or work for yourself in the future. :)

I think save, its usually the best idea.
Also by the time you get to $4000 the prices will have gone down too, so you'll get the stuff cheaper:)
