lil miss | Should it be easy for a couple to live on $15,000 a year? |
My husband and I are in college and we make around $15,000 a year. It has been really hard for me to save money and not resort to using our credit card. We aren't any more than $200 dollars in debt with credit card, but I feel like I am failing at keeping our budget.....should I try to do better or would this be difficult for two people to live on...
Monthly we pay $173 in rent
$20 medical bills
$110 phone bill
$15 internet
$200 food
$17 netflix
I know both internet and netflix are both unnecessary expenses, but all I am asking is if I should be doing better even with those. Additional Details We live in a low income housing apartment that takes so much of our income a month. We are in school so we can't work much more or we would be swamped, we share internet so we only pay a percentage and we have cell phones with a pretty high plan.... to explain all the expenses.... thanks for your input... I was just feeling pretty bad about not being able to budget better. You all made me feel pretty good though... thank you |

You're doing pretty well on $15,000 a year. Hopefully you and your husband are graduating soon and will end up in much higher paying jobs than you're in now. If you're not too much in debt, you might want to take out some student loans so you can live a bit more comfortably. My guess is maybe you should have gotten married after you both were on your feet financially. But then love makes us do funny things. Good luck! |

Sounds like you're doing an Excellent job other than that phone bill! I'm guessing you guys are on a cell phone contract and have no other choice than to pay $110/month, but I'd still like to suggest a pay as you go cell... What I did was get rid of my home phone since the just basic dail tone alone was costing me $35/month with all the taxes they tack on, I got a cingular pay as you go cell for $19 & a buy a $15 refill card every month. What's cool about this is that it only $15 a month AND if you dont use up all your minutes they roll over to the next month, I cant tell you how happy I am going this route, just wish I'd done years before , I cringe at the thought of all the money I wasted for a home phone! Keep up the good work! |

You have found a way to live at a low cost, and if you feel that you and your husband are struggling to make ends meet, then you should try to earn a little more money before you start to make your life more "pleaseable," exspecially if you and your husband want a family. |

Internet and netflix isn't the problem. Why do you have a $110 phone bill? Look at cutting some of those services. You should be able to get it down to $50

15,000 a year? That's considered below the poverty line. |

Netflix and internet are not the problem but what kind of internet do you have that its only $15 a month?? Our family of 4 spends $120 on food a week, maby you need to cut back on your food bill?? Also your phone bill is really expensive, what kind of phones do you have??
I think you are doing great though, keep it up $200 in debt is not much at all!! |

I am more impressed by the $173 for rent. The phone sounds like the budget buster. |

That is very very very low income. If you can live on tha, you are a genious budgetter!!!! Where did you find $173 rent?!?!!? And why do you pay almost as much on your phone as on your rent? |

Honestly..i would think $15,000 a year is poverty level. Why do you get netflix if you are low income??? I even canceled netflix in make an effort to cut back. $110 phone bill???? That's insane. |
