angelcutie | Tell me if your situation is a bad as mine. I'm 23 in college. I have 9,000 in student loan debt. I make? |
$480.00 a month from my work study job. My rent is $420.00 my electric bill is $40.00 a month. I have a roomate and we both pay over $400.00 a month for rent to live on campus. I don't have a car. I get $165.00 a month is foodstamps. I also have about $1,000 in medical bills. I'm trying to get health insurance but the premiums are to high for me to afford. I'm a full time college student. My parents don't have money to help me out and they don't want me to get a second job because I won't have as much time for homework. Is your financial situation as bad as mine? |

Welcome to the Bush economy... YoYo economics (You on your own). While the rest of us are going broke and can't afford to sustain a minimum standard of living without going deeper in debt each month, the top 1% who already owned most of the nations wealth are expanding their share even further. They aren't happy with just having most of the nations wealth in their own bank accounts, they feel they need ALL of it. |

mine was that bad when i was in college....i was working 3 jobs ( not kidding) and paying my parents house bills ( not kidding), they both lost their jobs during my third year ( in the span of 2 weeks, not kidding ) ..............you can putoff the school loans and health bills, theres 9 million ways to defer and/or get around those, the food stamps thing is weird, i went to uconn, food was part of your tuition if u lived on campus, but you should be able to make way more than 480 a month, i dont know where ya live, but even if you only worked 80 hours a month at some dumb job somewhere,. you should be able to do way better than that..............with the school loans and medical bills, jsut apply the old "cant get blood from a stone" trick, they are already into you for all this money and theres only so much they can do about it, outside of nukeing your credit score, there aint much.....they want to work with you because they want their money, ..........food rent cable, electric and books, you can pay for all that.............noone ever pays off their stupid school loans, nobody ever tells you that, it takes like 15 years, ive been out for 10 years, i still owe 5000, its basically free money, they give you 9 million ways to defer it..........my boss's wife is an eye doctor, shes 42, she still owes like 80000....................most states have cheap health insurance for young people you can buy, here in ct we have the husky program sponsored by uconn.........again though, you can get on a payment plan with the hospital and take like 40 years to pay it off................one thing to definitly definitly definitly stay away from is credit cards, the credit card companies love getting you when you are young, they got me really good. i had like 12 credit cards at one point, it was ridiculous and it jsut doomed me financially. i was broke and of course delusional as a young person, and completely stressed....... i know you are broke, but easy credit cards do nothing to help you, they really should ban those things for young people in college who are totally strapped...............serious, from someone who's been there and done that, they are the single worst thing you can do to yourself , even if they are about to shut all your power off and evict you from your apartment, credit cards only lengnthen your pain.........i always figured i would just deal with it later, when you have so many money problems, you just say ah what the hell, screw it, and you go pay stuff with the credit card.............well, the problem is, you never are able to dig yourself out........... your parents might be right about working 2 jobs, i had no choice, but looking back it really does just pile on the stress and makes it impossible to study...or be a normal human, .......yer a young person so you want to have a life too and you need to have one, so between trying to get good grades pay the bills and maybe party out some and meet people and find some cool dude or chick to go out with, the stress can f*ukin kill ya, or at least bend the mind some.................good luck..no credit cards............. |

you should seek out a health program in your area, especially if you already qualify for foodstamps. In my area, U of Mich and Eastern Mich campuses has "washtenaw health plan" which gives free doctors visits, $25 ER visits, and $50 ambulance calls, and $5 for all generic prescriptions.
i think if you found a program like that it would help a lot with the day to day stuff.
many people on yahoo answers will tell you 9k in debt is very little for making it most of the way through college... you'll hear horror stories of 6 figure debts. for you, it's the day-to-day expenses that risk being put on high interest credit cards that could really hurt. stay away from the plastic, and you should be just fine when you finish school!
oh and btw, don't let people tell you that school isn't work. your academics are your job right now, and you should be working hard to get A's. your professionalism in academia will be your ticket into a secure job with comfortable compensation. |

I'm 27 and have almost completed my masters....my student loan debt is way higher then that....and i know people whose school debt totals around $100,000.. when i was in school (getting my BA) the money was never enough and the bills were always coming in. for example, my bills (rent, utilities, cell phone, cable, food, car and car insurance plus misc.) totaled around $1000 a month. I didn't get one dime from my family either. I worked hard as a waitress when i wasn't in classes. somehow i did manage to have fun...i don't know when i had time to, but i did.
it sucks having such a huge debt in school loans, but it was what i had to do to accomplish what i wanted to......
if i may suggest something not knowing the details of your life....it would probably be a better idea to quit the work study job cause they hardly pay anything...or at least cut back on hours and maybe get a waitressing job (you can pull in quick money on the weekends) or at the very least get a better paying job somewhere. make small payments on your medical bills. just call them and negotiate a a small amount each month even if its 20 bucks...or less....
and if you're really that hard up for money and your willing to tack on a little more student loan, apply for a loan that will help cover your living expenses...i know tons of people that did that as well.
it sucks i know...not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths. good luck....you're situation is really manageable and there is a lot worse out there even if it doesn't feel like it. ;) |

Wow. No, my situation isn't that bad... however, my sister is at least $40,000 in debt. My parents can't afford to pay for her college, so she had to take out a ton of loans. I hope things get better for you |

At least you're not $60, 000-$120,000 in school debt like most people I know... |

Thats nothing...when i was your age I was already 2 years out of Bankruptcy for 45k. Arent you getting the $2500 grant from Pell? if you are in state communitiy college, that alone should pay for your classes & books and the student loans would do for extra money. |

If your area of study will get you a decent job, then being in a total of $10K in debt is not so bad. If you are studying something that doesn't pay well or hard to find a job then you'll struggle to pay this off. You did not say how far you are from graduation but if it is this June, don't worry. |

wow, well my sugestion is that you try as much as possible to manage, your parents knows the best for you and i agree with them with regards the second job thing, so your situation ofcourse is bad but there must be a situation worse than yours and that i think should be an encouragement to you, so you don't have to apply for a loan again because it will only cause more harm to you. |

Wow. No, it's not. A whole 20 bucks not designated for bills each month (assuming you don't pay down any debt)? Thanks for helping short-circuit any pity party I might have been thinking about having!
I wish I had boatloads of useful suggestions for you, but that sounds really tough. You might check out a local food pantry for additional help with food. A government-run one will have qualification requirements (you may qualify, anyway); a church one will probably be more lax.
Contact your local Dept. of Job & Family Services and see if they can refer you to any additional resources in your area. Sometimes churches have free medical clinics. You could simply call around yourself, too.
That sounds super hard in many ways, but also because you have no budget for entertainment. Everyone needs a little breathing room! Definitely check out your local library for free movies and music. There may be a second-run dollar theater in your area as well. I assume you're very familiar with used bookstores.
Thrift stores, consignment shops, second-day bread stores, discount grocery stores: these can all be thrifty places to shop (assuming you have any money to shop with).
Here's a site that you may find useful, which enables you to ask for free stuff in your local community:
http://www.freecycle.org/
You could also check out your local Craigslist.org site under "Gigs." You might find one- or two-day jobs that you could squeeze in your schedule without an extensive time commitment. Sometimes people just want to hire help around the yard, for example.
You could also try this site, but it's much more limited in its locations:
http://www.domystuff.com/home
Here are a couple sites with helpful info about money:
http://www.bankrate.com/
http://www.debtproofliving.com/
You could write the hospital or doctor, explain your situation, and ask if there is any way they could reduce the amount you owe. It can't hurt to ask!
Does your campus offer any student health services that you could use?
I don't know if you would qualify, but there's a prescription assistance program. But I believe you have to visit a doctor in order to apply for it. Check it out, anyway:
https://www.pparx.org/Intro.php
And I definitely agree with the person who said steer clear of credit cards. Those are almost always big trouble!
I wish I knew more to tell you. I pray things get better for you soon!
P.S. One thing to be grateful for: at least you're in college, improving your earning ability through education! It won't always be like this for you.
Without a college degree, many people are stuck all their lives in a very poor situation, difficult to get through. |

you are 23. I think you need to work and get off government assistance... free rides. stop borrowing money, then start attacking the debt. lowest to highest. pay off the 1k first... then work on the 9k... get on a budget, cut your living expenses and get the debt knocked out. :) Just cause your in college dont' mean you can't work. |
