All banks have an audit system, the cash transaction amounts recorded. The teller's drawer will be short and investigated.

Ask yourself how you're going to feel when the bank contacts you, can you be accountable for the consequences?

A few years ago, a large money transaction was deposited into my bank account, I knew immediately it was a mistake. Like you, my morals were being challenged..... but, I felt like a thief even though I wasn't responsible for the mistake and I didn't like the feeling. I knew I was responsible for my own behavior and the money wasn't mine. I called the bank president and reported the mistake, they hadn't discovered the error yet and he said he'd look into it. Later he called and thanked me for my honesty. His compliment was a much better feeling than feeling like a thief.

We are all taught right from wrong and we have to live with ourselves. My own "self worth" is important to me. The next time I needed a loan I felt confident about asking, that I could be trusted with their money.

If it was $500 in cash there is probably no way for them to know, but if it was $500 into your account they will find out.

Just do the right thing and return the money. $500 wont really go that far now days anyways. You dont want to get in trouble either. Just do the right thing in this sitatuion and return the money.

when your drawer is short, as a teller, you have to go over all transactions in great detail. if there's any hint that it was you, they will contact you. you should be honest and give it back. in some instances, that could cost a teller her job.

MJ S
I am amazed at all the crooks on this site.

The teller made a mistake
You know they made a mistake.
They will probably be responsible for the money, so you are taking it from the teller not the bank.

Simply put...
It is not yours, give it back. You'll sleep better with a clean conscience.

Besides every transaction is video recorded and time coded by the bank.

Yes, they will probably catch their mistake! You better hang on to the money and not spend it; they will surely call you. If they don't call, happy spending!!

I agree with all those who say to give it back and say shame on everyone who says differently.

Character consists of doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

I'm not a religious person but I am reminded of the admonition from the bible which asks "What profits a man that he should gain the whole world but lose his soul?"

Not for the world would I surrender my honor...and certainly not for $500.

They WILL certainly track it down and if they don't - the bank teller might lose her job or get it taken out of her pocket.

She could be depending on that to feed her kids this month or get them school clothes.

Do the right thing and return it!

christtheking9
I would suggest paying the money back. If they realize their error, they will definitely expect you to pay the money back. It's always possible they don't realize their mistake, but I wouldn't take the chance and spend money you don't have.

Jay B
Most banks have security cameras overlooking every teller, they will just go back and look at the footage and they will know they gave it to you by mistake. They will have evidence of that mistake and will expect you to pay it back to them.

No, theres no way for them to track you down (trust me, i work at a bank) but the teller risks getting fired. Would that be ok with you? you can totally be screwing up someones life. They didnt mean to give that money so you spending it like its yours is just plain wrong..You should be honest, THATS NOT YOUR MONEY --and karma's a *****. i would do whats right and return the money --you didnt get lucky, its a test of your honesty.. i gaurentee if you spend it at one point or another your gonna lose something of value to you -thats just the way it goes..take it back

It is different then keeping 5 dollars from a grocery clerk. You can get in a lot of trouble. and you conscience won't feel too good either. Return it. If it was a roll of quarters, it might be a diff story.

FRANK
The bank has cameras, and will be able to find the error on film.

goclaygo
As the great monopoly said, the bank made an error in your favor, collect five hundred dollars. But really if it bothers you then return it, in my opinion $500 isn't worth my self respect, but I'm not every one. It is doubtful they will track you down though

Uuummm... I am not sure if they will. You should go return it though. THey might find a glitch somewhere and find out, but then again, how will they know she gave it to you and not someone else????

Your Y!A BFF
yeah...not only is honesty the best policy...you could probably get in trouble as you clearly did not get the $500 from the sky!

Could use ur help

I am assuming that when the teller does their daily close-outs they will notice the difference in balances. After which they will have to review all the daily logs, and pin point where the money went. After which they could be in contact with you.

They will catch you and prosecute you. RETURN IT ASAP.

Gypsy Girl
Yes, they will track you down and take it out of your account even if that causes your account to be overdrawn. By the way, we call that stealing. If the bank wants to make your life miserable, they can have you arrested. It would be best to return the money.

Britney S
Yes, they will track you down so your best bet is to go back to the bank and give it back so you won't be embarrassed or look like a thief

This is not traceable. I would consider it a blessing and move on. One thing to note, do not deposit the $500 into your account. They are probably waiting to see who is unusually depositing an extra $500 so they can track the money. Go buy something you need with it, or put it in a stash in your home or something. Just don't deposit it into the account.

chipmunk
return you are stealing from the bank return it now

xpditeme
I think thats the bank tellers fault then. He/she should get fired.

PJ
One time they gave me an extra $100.00. They didn't track me down - I don't think they can know for sure who they gave the extra money to. Don't spend it right away, just in case they come after you.

Don't worry about it. Just keep an eye on your account because they might take $500 from your account.

Don't spend the money just in case though. Put it away, if they haven't contacted you in 2 months then spend it.

Personally I wouldn't give it back. It's their job to know how to count and clearly the person can't so she/he shouldn't even be working there.

I've had them give me $65 extra when I took in change and it was fixed within an hour and the money was back out of my account.

Keep an eye on your account to see what happens.
