Trying to maintain good credit but grandparent needs help?
I have had a credit card for the past 6 months and I have paid it off in full faithfully each month. I budget my money each month and am able to live--frugally but comfortably. My elderly grandmother is in need of help. She hasn't been able to pay her car insurance and needs money-- at least $100. that she doesn't have. I don't make that much being a full time college student and lending her this would hurt. Her son gets plenty of money but refuses to help as does her brother. I am thinking of lending her the $100. and having a balance of $100. on my credit card until I can pay it off. I don't like doing this because my credit score is low and I am currently in the process of repairing it. Will it REALLY hurt me THAT bad?

I know you want to help your grandma, but are you really helping her by loaning her the money? If she is living as tight as she is, she does not have the ability to pay you back. If you loan her this money, you pretty much will be writing it off somewhere down the road as never seeing it again. I would even go as far as saying, that if you give her this $100, itis indeed that... a gift. Unless she is about to have a different financial picture, she is only going to need another $100 next month and the next month and the next...

Sounds like you may want to have a family meeting with her other relatives to discuss her money issues and work out a way to help support her.

Help your gramma out. You only have one of her and you can always repair your credit rating later. You're a good person, so stay that way.

Do it for granny, you will be rewrded in the end. You only have one granny.

What will hurt you is not helping your grandmother...sometimes we have to give of ourselves even when we feel it may put us behind a little...trust me you will get a blessing in return

No it won't hurt you, just pay it off as soon as possible. What will hurt, is not helping your Grandmother.

do it.. family first...

I'm just moving through real quick today, doing cut and paste answers...this part is cut and pasted, but the sentence above was not. I mean every word of it, even if it's just one word. Today is a points day. Rock on ....

No it won't, as long as you pay the minimum on your credit card on time, it will not affect your credit at all. In fact making at least the minimum payment to your credit card is fine, the only thing that would affect your credit is if you are late paying it. you can have a balance on it for the rest of your life and as long as you pay on time, your good to go.

Angie
As long as you are making at least the minimum payments each month, it shouldn't hurt your credit rating.

Word of warning regarding lending money to relatives. Don't lend anything that you can't afford to make a gift. Nothing against your grandma, but relatives tend to be bad about paying money back. If she pays you back, wonderful, but if not, then she's just gotten an early Birthday gift.

Well, you need to keep your credit balance under 50% so if your card currently has a 0 balance and your available is $400 you'll be good. If it is 200, then you'll be right at that 50%. Good luck, sounds like u r doing a good job. But remember, what goes around comes around.

JNH
That's very honorable of you. You lending her $100 will not cause your credit to plummet, but you do need to at least make a minimum payment on the credit card. A lot of people carry a balance on their cards. Just as long as it doesn't spin out of control.

I love my baby boy!
As long as you pay at least the minimum payment every month and do not default on your credit card, carrying a balance for a few months will not hurt your credit score, but it will help it.

Lil Lizzie
No it won't. Help Grandma out. Family is more important than any status.

$100 to help your grandmother will not hurt your credit, as long as you pay at least the minimum monthly payment. The bigger issue is why do her son and brother refuse to help her? Has she been irresponsible with money in the past or are they just greedy jerks? I cannot imagine not helping my mother if she needed $100. My car insurance premium is far more than $100, so will she need more money soon, and if so, will she turn to you for more? If you give her the money, you need to make it clear to her that it is all you can afford, being a college student, and perhaps you can help her get some assistance. Call your local or county Dept. of Aging to see if there is any assistance she can get, say for utilities, etc, so she has more money to pay her insurance. You are a good grandson for wanting to help her.

Take care of your grandmother.
I applaud your careful management of your credit, but life is also about more than just you. Let her know that it needs to be returned (even if it is in payments to you or you will not be able to help her again!)

Perhaps you can look at her budget with her and help her to arrange it so that she can do better. Maybe she is overextended and needs to cut something out or shop for cheaper insurance.
