f you can cancel the plan with no penalty, do it and just get one of those pay as you go plans or a low cost phone with a rechargeable cell phone calling card - limit yourself to $20 a month or something

OR... If you have broadband internet access at home, get a Magicjack. $40 gets you the device and unlimited domestic calling for the 1st year - only $20 a year after that - plugs into your computer's USB port and then into any regular house phone - you even get a phone number - go to magicjack.com

hmm, I am an anti-cell phone activist. I do, however, have a home phone. Which is A LOT cheaper! I don't think it could hurt!

Home phones are much cheaper.
Call your local phone company.
Ask them if there are any activation fees.
I don't suspect activation is more than 50 bucks.
With a monthly bill of local only of 25/ month.

Dump the cell phone. Just go to a bare bones wired line at home. Chop your tv cable service back to bare bones. This fall, you should start shopping for a better car. Think I will steal your idea.

First off, the cell phone is a personal decision that no one but you can determine. As far as saving up money, go up to the bank and open up an ADD-ON CD account. I used to have one helluva time saving money, because money is to me earned and then spent, no matter what you spend it on. I was advised to open up an Add-On CD account at my bank by one of the PR specialists. I opened up a 5 year one 2 years ago, and so far, I have in it over 6,000 dollars. It's foolproof. You can put in all the money you want, but under no circumstances, can you take it out until it matures (i.e, I will be able to withdraw or re-new mine in just short of three years.).

Yes! Helll, my bill had got up to $200 a month, and me and the wife had to drop the bich since we didn't have the money to pay it. Guess what? We're still alive! What's a trip is that the damm bill goes on and on even when you're not paying it. Our is now $400 since it's been off two months for nonpayment. Ain't that a bich!!!

A basic home phone is like $20/ month after taxes. Plus you can buy a phone with a built in answering machine, so you don't have to pay for extra features like voice-mail through the phone company. Just be aware that long distance will cost extra on a land-line, so use a calling card if you're going to spend an hour chatting with out-or-town friends or family.

If you have high speed internet there are ways to get a phone line through your internet connection for a lot less than $50/ month

If you can't stand the idea of not having a cell phone for emergencies, get a prepaid phone. They're like $8/month minimum if you don't use it much.

You must have a phone. You need it on job applications, credit applications, if you have to go to the doc or hospital, for family to get a hold of you in an emergency, call AAA if the car breaks down, ad infinitum! You do NOT need a $50/month cell phone bill. TracFone prepaid cellular, buy 1000 mins at a time, and your annual phone bill is @$100. Actually, 1000 mins lasts me about 14-15 months, so that's $7/month.

Alternatives: MagicJack -- $39.95 + sh = $46.90. You must have broadband/cable internet service, and plug the jack into a USB port, and your phone into the jack. No service charges, no calling charges.

Regular old landline phone service will run about $20/month. Vonage is under $30/month (remember all the taxes on phone bills!).

You can easily cut your phone bill 50% or more. You can get phone service for several years for less than one month's cell bill with that MagicJack thingy.

I'd use the home phone: much cheaper, and you can get rid of your tariff. But you could go on "pay as you go", and only pay when you use the cell phone. Either way, it's worth getting rid of the expensive phone.

Oh, and how often do you have emergencies? If you do, I'm sure someone in the street will be happy to call 911. Or you could use a pay phone for free, since it's an emergency.

Yes, most definetly my boyfriend did it to save up $80 a month and he has survived.

Good for you.

I use to pay $40 per month for my cell phone. I only use it for emergency as well, which means my usage is around 30 - 60 mins per month. $40 dollar is way too much for that kind of usage.

About two year ago I switch to T-mobile prepaid plan. If you refill your phone with $100 (1000 minutes), the minutes will not expire for 1 year. Then each year you can put as low as $10, your left over minutes will get extend for another years.

I started with $100, after 1 year I still have about $60 left, so I add another $10 to it and it is good for another year. So at this point my monthly cell phone bill is a little over $4.50 ($110 / 24months).

Remember this to work, your cell phone usage got to be emergency only.

Hope this help.

well i'm almost 14, and everyone i know uses phones, cos that's what 14 year olds do, but i have never had one on me, so if a 13 year old/almost 14 can handle it, surely you can.
