disco_stoo_1 | (UK) Is it quite normal to constantly have no 'expendible income' and it be very frustrating? |
I live and work in the UK and have a decent, but not superb, wage. I also have a mortgage and car and once this and all the crap that comes with it (insurance, council tax, bills) is paid, I never have any exposable income left!
This has now been the situation for me for almost 4 years... I refuse to get a loan to access luxuries as I don't want to have to owe anyone money and pay interest. Are most people in the UK in a similar situation??? |

welcome news
 |
Regrettably this is often the case. The high price of houses and the increase in mortgage rates means that for many people a large proportion of their income is tied to paying the mortgage. Make sure that you can cope with a 10% increase in your repayments!
Also, of course, under the Labour Government, Council Tax has increased substantially more rapidly than wage inflation. there is not a lot you can do about council tax but you may be able to save on gas/ electricty by switching suppliers.
I am impressed you have not taken a loan - this shows sensible financial planning - 8 million people in the country are in dire financial straights due to excessive borrowing and with mortgage rates expected to continue to rise there may be a major collapse in the housing market in the next 12 months.
I can't give much advice about improving the standard of living - the easiest of course would be to sell your home and find a cheaper one or see how much letting costs - it may be a good idea - sell at the top and buy again in 18 months time with prices 25% cheaper and let in the meantime.
Also - about the car - have you considered selling and buying an older small car to save on petrol? Can you reduce your mileage? Again I don't know much about you to know if this is feasible. |

Yes same here, blame our government for it. |

That sounds remarkably familiar.
I try to make the most of my income but try as I may my council tax increase wipes out my entire cost of living increase in my salary from my employer. I am now paying 130 pounds a month basically to have my bins emptied. It appears I am having to reduce my own private pension contributions to fund my councils final salary scheme.
Gas and Electricity have shot through the roof despite my best efforts to reduce consumption.
It's rip off britain alright. |
