Get down to the bank and talk with someone. If you can't get there, at least put a freeze on your account until you can get there. |

Tell the bank, because sooner or later they are going to figure it out. If you spend it you will have to repay it because it is not yours. |

I would close that account, go to a different bank and open up a new one so that it doesn't get traced back to you. |

If you're sure it's your bank account (how could you be unsure?) and nobody else has access to it, AND it's been 5 years since it appeared there and nobody has come to you asking for it, the I would say that you are free of all legal obligations to pay it back to anyone who asks for it, on the grounds that there is no standing written or verbal contract for it and they have not contacted you about any mistake that might have been made in your favor with the intention of fixing it. |

the bank has records of all deposits i would have asked when i first noticed it. you could have unknowlingly hurt someone financially by not telling the bank if it was put in the wrong account. its been so long now though i dont know what they would do. good luck. |

Don't you want to find out who put it there?
If not just spent it on investments. |

Yeah take the money and run! I'd withdraw it and close the account then open a new one. Generally if someone can deposit money in an account then they can withdraw too. So take the cash and enjoy.
Also, look at the records to see where the deposit came from. Was it a transfer or done by deposit ticket? |

if it has been there 5 years i would not worry about it and dont spend it all at once but i would say it is yours to do what you want with it by now. |

Five years is a long time to wait before asking the bank how it got there and who put it there...and why. The honest thing to do is discuss it with your banker. |

That is a really hard question. I would probably tell them, only because I wouldn't want to get caught. Banks can trace stuff like that---even if it had been 5 years, I would still be scared. However, if I found it, I would keep it for sure. |

Talk to the bank about this because the same person who put it their could take it all back and then some!!!! |

Did you read your deposit slips when the money showed up? It will tell you where it came from. It might be a bank error. They put Joe Blow's money in your account. I had that in reverse one time. A data processor miskeyed one number and tried to subtract $2000 from my account instead of someone else's.
Go to the bank. Take any documentation you have and get someone there to help you figure out where the money came from and if it is really yours.
If it is yours, move it to savings and watch your money grow. |
