eat lots of ramen noodles and food from the dollar store. wacky mac is only 89 cents per package. the food at the dollar store isn't expired, just overstocked. buy generic brands... not name brands. they're just as good. |

I suggest buying cheap, filling things like bread and rice. And instead of ramen, buy chicken stock and make your own soup. You will get more soup for your money. Use your tap water for drinking.
Definitely don't eat out, not even $1 cheeseburgers, and avoid packaged food as well. Cook your own food with cheap grocery ingredients. |

Skip the ramen noodles unless you want to have high blood pressure when you're done. Buy bulk meats like chicken legs or thighs. Watch for sales. This time of year, our local stores have london broil on sale for about $1.49/lb. You can strech that really far for 2 people. Buy frozen veggies, in big bags. Skip name brands if you can. Buy Store brad or generic cereal. Pasta and rice are cheap. You can eat inexpensively and well. I fed a family of 4, including formual and diapers on $75 a week. You can do this, it takes planning. |

Don't eat out; don't buy coffees/lattes/ice creams/treats; don't buy pre-packaged or pre-washed food items.
Plan out your meals for the month in advance. Once you have a list of the simple but nutrious meals you'll eat that week and how much you can spend, THEN go shopping, and stay within your budget - don't buy what's on sale if it isn't on your list, because that doesn't save you money (you can replace items on your list with cheaper alternatives, but you can't add).
Pasta, especially iron-enriched pasta, is usually a good choice. You may need a couple meals of Top Raamen or mac'n'cheese to stay within budget. Avoid junk food, cookies, anything brand name. Stick to fruits&veggies that are in season, since these are usually the cheapest.
Also, find ways to mooch food. Fill up on free samples at grocery stores and farmer's markets. If you do eat out, order the slightly larger size and get a doggie bag so you get two meals for the price of one. Explain your situation to friends and family and see if they will invite you over for dinner once a week. |

Apply for food stamps as an interim help. Check with food banks to see what is available. Some co-ops can offer foods at decent package prices. Cook from scratch and from items that are on sale. Use coupons (free on the internet and usually enough in the Sunday paper to cover the cost). Some foods simply go farther than others (rice, beans, pasta). You don't say where you live but some areas have pick-your-own produce available. Good luck and God bless. |

Try finding a save a lot or something like that, and purchase things you can freeze and things that are in cans so they last longer. |

food ideas:
oatmeal
rice
pasta
potatoes
peanut butter
tuna
noodles
beans, lentils
flour tortilla shells
things to avoid:
snacks, candy
chips
bottled water/ soda pop
fatty foods
protein (meat, cheese, etc) is more expensive than grains, so use sparingly.
eating out, especially fast food
convenience foods will kill your budget quick
foods that are empty calories
dinner rolls
processed food
frozen dinners
some ideas:
make enough food for leftovers and be disciplined about eating it
use coupons
watch for sales/ sales ads and compare unit costs
buy in bulk
contact the local food pantry or religious organization and ask for ideas or if there are any programs. It may be humbling to get some food from the pantry, but if they can provide you with some staples like bread, flour, cereal, etc...that is less money you have to spend and is donated by people that want to help people in situations like yours.
visit family. I think it is normal to serve food to family. A meal here or there at family's house is not out of the ordinary.
volunteer at the soup kitchen a couple days a month/week. You'll help others in the same situation and be able to eat yourself.
Try and save dollars in other areas of your life as well. For example, be very disciplined about cell phone minutes, not making wasted trips in the car, only using the air conditioner when absolutely necessary, taking shorter showers, etc.
plan your meals, which also helps you plan your shopping.
know the price of what you buy regularly, if possible at a few different stores.
Don't be brand loyal or store loyal and you can save money.
Eat a little bit larger breakfast later in the day and dinner earlier to avoid eating lunch or eat a very light lunch. If you and your partner are able to eat one piece of bread less a day that's about $4.00 a month. Little things add up.
Search for vegetarian recipes. Become a vegetarian a few nights a week.
Avoid things like lottery tickets, magazines, going out, and other entertainment expenses that are unnecessary.
Be creative. Have a plan. Think outside the box. |

Hit Walmart for the bulk stuff. You can get a 40lb bag of rice for about $10. Same for beans. Making home made food is a lot more time consuming, but it is much cheaper. Healthier too. |

buy second day bread, costs half. or better, make your own. i have been doing this for 2 years, it takes about 1/12 hrs and you can freeze what you do not use right away.
a back of 25lbs flour costs $6. you can make many more loaves of bread than buying already made.
also, when (if veggies get old, i cook them in yummy minestrone, then freeze. same for lentil soup. delicious and inexpensive) |

Yeah, I really don't think that can be in your contract...go to the state anyway and ask for employment. There are so many eople that are told they can't collect unemployment or disability but they really can. Also, but lots of ramen (They are 10-15 cents for one package) The soup is pretty good, every college student I knew lived on it when they got their own place. Also, that perdue individually wrapped chicken is good. Where as two bigger breasts are 5-7 dollars in Giant, the perdue breasts are 9.99 for 6 breasts that are "perfectly portioned" and it is SO good. Lots of sandwiches like PB and J or ham (Generic, not deli) and cheese. Don't go out to eat or buy McDonalds or buy ready made food. Only get food on sale, don't go to little convenience stores if you can help it (but just till you are back to work, gotta give them the business) Buy generic everything. Don't buy frozen dinners, they are expensive also. Also, those boxes of instant mashed potatos, I think betty crocker makes them, are pretty cheap and SO good. I got 10 boxes for 10 dollars the other day. And there are 2 meals in each box. Good luck |

Ok. I haven't done $100 for 2 people for a month, but I've come close. First, drink only water. Then, buy lots of Ramen noodles. Don't buy any meat....get eggs and peanut butter. Cereal, canned vegetables and fruit, macaroni and cheese, pasta, spaghetti sauce, and potatoes are all relatively cheap. You'll get tired of the same stuff quickly, but you should be able to just make it. |
