it's a tax-deferred retirement plan. it means your employee deducts however much you want him too from your paycheck, prior to your paying taxes, and deposits it in the 401K. the 401K is invested to earn interest and you can't take it out until you reach retirement age (you can take it out before then, but there's a huge penalty). it's just simply a pre-tax retirement plan. the 401K is the tax code # that it refers too. and your employer doesn't always match what you put in, that strictly up to the policy of the company. and it's not like a raise--as it's your own money that you've already earned! |

It's a retirement plan that is offered through one's employer. Sometimes they match it, meaning you can put in a dollar and they'll put in a dollar, doubling your savings, or sometimes it's just what you put in. It's protected from taxing and can still be taken out if needed but not without harsh tax penalties. |

Hey there - what a great question!
You can read all about 401K's at the link below, wiki's info-rich entry on it, that begins "The 401(k) plan is a type of employer-sponsored retirement plan..."
If you're interested in learning about money, check out CNN's Money 101 and see what you think. (second link)
Take care :) |

It is an investment towards retirement. They come in many forms, some banks offer them, financial institutes, and work places offer them too. Here are some of the commercials seen on tv: Filidity, American Century, and I think Inc / Ing.
They do not cost that much to open one and some have a limit to how much can be put in yearly. There are even tax free ones; you only pay the taxes for when you withdrawal the $ out, but not what you put into the 401K. |

It's a type of retirement 'account' that companies offer employees. Most companies allow you to contribute whatever percentage of your paycheck (before taxes), and some match that %. Usually, you are not to take money out of that 'account', and if you absolutely need to, you must promise to repay the amount by a certain date/time. |

a retirement account, where your employer matches your contributions. it's like araise for doing nothing. but there are tax breaks for leaving you money in there for 20 years. as soon as you get a job that offers this benefit. put as much money in as you company matches. |
