I borrowed 550 pounds from my grampa telling him i would pay it back when i have my trust fund money. This was about 2 months ago,I wanted the money to pay the rest of my holiday up but then me and the boys didnt decide to go on holiday .SO i spent all of it and then when my trust fund came through i spent that to on gambling.I am 18 and my mother is nagging me and pressurising me to pay it back what can i tell her and my grampa as i used most excuses about losing money in the passed.
Any advice? |

OK, gambling isn't something you do when in debt, but you know that. Take this opportunity to teach yourself a lesson, actuallt two:
1. How to handle money responsibly (it isn't easy, but can be done and you're going to have a far better life making sure you know how to). Firstly, it's uncomfortable being in debt - as you know, Secondly, gambling will not help ease a debt situation - as you know. Thirdly set goals, save up for them, spend only what you have - this you need to learn.
2. Trust that as long as you're honest with your mistakes, people around you will come to your help. They might go for the "tough love" option, but probably because it's needed. In the long run, an honest person is a nice one to have around, even if they mess up sometimes.
So, be brave darling, fess up and accept the help you're given...even if it is a scolding and a repayment plan. You'll feel good sorting this one out!

First of all, NEVER BORROW FROM FAMILY! It's just a bad idea. Secondly, don't gamble. Maybe it was fun, but now you are broke your own money AND your borrowed money from your grampa. You need to tell him the truth and work out a payment plan. What you've done now is this, borrowed money from your grampa, didn't pay it back, and now ruined your financial credibility with him, plus proved yet another case that 18 year olds are immature. Action now: pay him back. If you have to sell your stereo, tv, get a part time job delivering pizzas. Pay him back and do it quick. |

Hold your hands up... they'd much rather you do that in the long run and tell them you will do anything you can to sort it out.
They should see it as gambling the problem and not you...
This is an addiction so it would be unfair for them to be overly reacting but they have every right to be annoyed...
Just be the man and own up =) Iv been there before and now I feel better that I spoke about it.. believe me Id still be crapping it if I did not say anything.

Come clean and admit that you need help with gambling....turn on the tears if they dont come naturally, even if you dont think you need help, it might soften the blow a bit. And also agree to pay it back in instalments but it'll just be a bit later that he gets his money. |
