What about my future, how can I save money for the future when im living paycheck to paycheck?

How far in the future are you talking? If you are talking about the near-distant future, every bit you can put aside helps. Even if it is only $20 a paycheck, take it out and put it into a savings account. Don't touch the money and let it keep accumulating. If for instance you get paid bi-weekly and put $20 a paycheck into a separate savings account, after a year you will have saved $520. And how much are you REALLY going to miss that $20 each pay period? Every little bit helps!

If you are talking about the long-term future, does your company offer a 401K? I know that my company will match any amount up to 8% of my paycheck. So lets say my paycheck is for $1000, I am having 8% deducted into my 401K which would equal $80 per paycheck. And then my company is matching that amount which means $160 gets put into my 401K each paycheck. Take that times the approximate 40 years before I retire and that amounts to $166,400 just in what Ive paid in any my company has matched. That of course doesn't include any gains or losses on what I've invested my money into.

Hope that helps!

Yes, I read an article recently that has stuck with me (I apologize I believe I read it on bankrate.com) it basically explained how 1 cent compounded in a 401k over 20 years is = to $22. Everyone drops a penny once in a while. So my though is to start by putting away 1% of your check each payday (you will have to do the math on this but it will help you start saving for retirement).

So figure out what 1% of your paycheck is multiply it by 2200, then multiple that by the # of paydays in a year, this is what you are putting away annually (after it it compounded over the years).

Oh! the rut of life we have been sold.

Get up. Go to work. Pay the bills. Get up. Go to work. Pay the bills. It is a hypnotic rhythm.

What you want to try to do is pay your bills the MINUTE you get them. If you have a car bill and/or a house payment, pay the minimum PLUS more, and dont spend money on things you dont really need, like sodas, movie tickets, fancy clothes, etc.
Build up your credit score as much as possible. then, if/when you need it, you can get a loan.
if you dont already have one, get a credit card. buy simple things, like groceries or a pair of shoes/jeans etc; and pay that off every month. your credit score will skyrocket over about 9 months if you do this.
Try to save about 5$ a day and put it into a Certificate of Deposit (CD) the CD has to be at least 1,000 dollars or more. a CD gets monthly interest, which makes you more money. most interest on a CD is between 31/4 % to 51/4 %.

hope that helps

Set up an automatic periodic transfer of money to a savings account that you will not touch.

This is a huge pain in the*$$ but it works. Write down for 2 weeks EVERYTHING you spend money on (even a candy bar) just to see how fast the "day-to-day" money goes. You'd be amazed what we spend without even thinking about it. Then try to trim those expenses 1st.

I know it's tough, but there are a few things you can do, even without a lot of cash. I've found it's easier to save without thinking about it. If your employer has a sponsored plan (401k or similar) start my making a small contribution. It'll come out of your check and save you on taxes and you won't even miss it because it's gone before you see it. Also, if your employer does any kind of matching (it's common for most employers to match up to the first 3%), make sure you're contributing enough to receive the full benefit - otherwise you're walking away from free money.

If your employer doesn't have any kind of plan, then have your bank do an automatic transfer on payday to a savings or moneymarket account. You could also set up an IRA and have it automatically deducted on payday.

If you don't have to think about saving, it's a lot easier to do - especially if you don't have to think about the money or "miss" it - it's gone before you see it.

It doesn't have to be a lot that you save - just $10 (think a pizza) a week will get you rather far. I found inspiration in playing with some online calculators that will tell you how much you can save with very little out of pocket now. Check out these sites:

http://www.401k.com
http://www.fool.com/calcs/calculators.htm?source=LN
http://finance.yahoo.com
http://moneycentral.msn.com/retire/home.asp

One last good site is http://www.sharebuilder.com - they will let you buy partial shares of stock with an automatic deduction so you start building your portfolio slowly and steadily.

Oh - and probably most imporantly GET OUT OF CREDIT CARD DEBT!!!! If you're paying, lets say, 18% interest on credit card debt, and earning an average 8% on investments - YOU ARE LOSING 10%. Pay off debts first. Period.

This is one of those questions that's easy to answer in words but very difficult to practice in life...

Either make more money or spend less money. Oh, as long as you're dreaming about fiscal responsibility... just plan on doing both.

Seriously, the best savings account for most people is home ownership. Paying a mortgage forces money into an appreciating asset -- real estate. It may not seem like much when you start but after several years of pinching pennies to make the mortgage each month, you'll be pleasantly surprized with the equity you've accrued.

Some good answers out there and some very bad ones. The simple matter is if you spend more than you make you go farther in debt. This is not just for the rich or poor, there all in debt.

Why people continue to put their standard of living just a little above what they make I will never understand.

Start with a budget!! and buy Dave Ramsey's book "Total Money Makeover", better yet check it out from the library. I read it in a weekend and you can to.

He does a free live radio show you can listen to on line. Check out his web page.
