What actually happens when someone is put "in collection?"?
I have been at loggerheads with my medical insurance over who is responsible for an in-hospital stay. My insurance says it wasn't "medically necessary" but if a doctor recommended it, I feel the insurance must pay. The hospital has threatened to place me in collection. Why do they think a collection agency will have any better luck obtaining the payment since have no intention of ever paying this bill? I have no credit, so they can ruin that. What will ultimately happen?

They can sue you for the money. If they are successful, they can garnish your wages. You need to set up a payment plan with the company. This will never "just go away".

I have no credit, so they cant ruin it. I wish you would've stated your age. If you've been turned over to a collection agency, then eventually you'll have your paycheck garnished, first they will take you to small claims court, and the judge will order you to pay it. If you had services done , why don't you just work out a payment plan? most hospitals and doctors will let you pay $5 a month until you get them paid back.

It means that you aren't paying your bills on a timely basis or satisfactorily, and the debt is now in the hand of a bill collection agency. This can really put a crimp on your credit rating. Whatever you own, short of the clothes on your back and tools you need to make a living can be seized and sold. Your wages can be garnished. Do you really want to take this rocky path?

The worst thing will happen to you. They will garnish your wage and take out a portion of your pay check til you paid everything including interest. You cannot escape your debt unless you go into bankruptcy

From my understanding the collection company will just send you a ton of mail telling you if you dont pay theyll make your creidt bad the some company will send you a speacil letter giving different payment option over a period of time or one lump sum at 50% off .. etc. Eventually if you dont make in effort to check on the bill or respone to there letter i THINK theres a 7 year staue of limitation.
Thank God they dont have debters prison anymore =)

Your argument is with the insurer. The hospital doesn't care about that. If it goes unpiad, it will sell the debt to a collection agency that will then attempt to collect from you. Ultimately, they can sue and obtain a judgement against you. Whether or not you care about your own credit rating is irrelevant.

If I understand your question, you want to know what happens to the collection account. The previous answers are correct. FYI, some hospitals are now trying to collect money that tye are not actually owed. It you have an employer with an HR dept, get with them and review your insurance plan. Then get with your insurance carrier and find out if you REALLY owe this; then you can decide how to proceed. Good Luck!

You will need an attorney.

If the bill goes 4 months without being paid, it is considered "delinquent." Then they can take you to court and force you to play plus late interest fees and court costs. Better settle this soon.

it will just make your credit score lower. when you go to buy a house or car you'll end up paying a higher interest rate. what's the amount they're talking about? a collection company will work with you so you can make low monthly payments. it may be worth it to pay it off...credit affects everything you do!

Imtheprez
what will happen is..that bill is in your name and once that is turned over to collections they will send letters and letters stating you need to pay. Even if you have no credit it will stay on your credit report as a negative until you pay it and then it will still state that it was 30 days 60 days 90 days then 120 days past due...which looks really bad on your credit and makes credit score lower.

Jaime
I wouldnt let it get to collections, since there will then most likely be: additional attorneys fees, interest, and lien on your property. You most likely should hire an attorney and maybe he can work out something with the ins. co or a payment plan with the hospital.

Hey U, Yeah U..Get over here
if you have no credit then you'll have bad credit after this. bad credit, essentially, is better than no credit. it will stay on your credit report for 7 years....after about 3 years you can negotiate with the credit companies.
