You could run your stereo, tv and lights in your house for a week and not use as much as your hot water heater or air conditioner uses in one day. You can put your hot water heater on a timer that heats the water just before you use it. Keep your thermostat set around 80° when you're not home. Use your microwave oven instead of your conventional oven or stove. Make sure that your windows and doors are sealed so that you aren't trying to air condition your whole neighborhood. |

Three years ago, I bought a smart thermostat. It cost me $100. I can set it for 71 degrees for the evenings and mornings, and then let it go to 75 during the afternoon. SImilarly, I can let it drop to 66 degrees during the afternoon in the winter. Also, I can set it for 71 degrees all weekend long.
The best part is that my energy bills have dropped about $5-10 in the spring and fall, and $15-20 each month during summer and winter. I installed it myself, but you may want to get qualified help. |

Of course using less will cost a bit less -- but to get a significant reduction in you bill (your actual question), check out a "Time-of-day-rate plan" (or whatever your utility company calls it).
If you can accommodate your usage to fit such a plan the savings can be substantial (maybe for e.g. -- 3 cents/KWH vesus 8).
Does not hurt to check. |

To save money in my home, I got new appliances which replaced my 20 year old appliances. That saved a lot.
My central air is on a separate meter which the electric company gives a lower rate.
We have a programmable thermostat - helps a lot.
Have ceiling fans in each bedroom.
Change light bulbs to energy efficient ones.
Dont waste electricity - if you dont need the light or TV, shut it off. |

You could light a few candles on an evening, making sure that you set them away from curtains or any flammable material, we have them on a large dresser in the lounge, very romantic lol. Make sure they are out before you go to bed. |

We have all of our electronics on a power strip. When the TV, microwave, etc are not "on" we flip the switch on the power strip. Also use energy star rated appliances, compact florescent light blubs and wear less clothing in the summer and more in the winter.
Since some of our heat is electric, we also take measures in winter and summer to reduce use of electric in heating, cooling and light.
During the day, we open shades to gather sunlight into the house. Gorw fast growing vines over the windows wear the sun shines in during the summer to reduce solar heat gain, but those vies die off in the winter and can let that extra heat into the house. Have also insulated our water pipes, water heater and windows in the winter. |
