Just a Dog Chasing Cars
What are little ways to save money in a household?
my husband just received a 40% pay cut, and while we'll still be okay (our house is paid off, 2 of our three kids' college is paid for)we'll be saving less than we have before. we are planning on not using the maid we usually had come every other week, and cut down on eating out, but what other things do you think we could do? i'm sure many of you are dealing with these problems due to the poor economy state, so i'm sure many of you have good ideas. thanks so much.

Look at each monthly bill that comes in with a questioning eye. Ask yourself, do we really need this? At this level of service? Can we get it cheaper elsewhere?

I did that a couple of years ago and shaved off over $100 in monthly spending by making a few changes.

I shopped my auto insurance around and found a competitor charging $500 less a year. This was at Costco by the way. If you are a member, get a quote from their web site.

I looked at my cell phone bill and ditched it in favor of a prepaid cell phone since I'm a light user. I went from $29 a month to about $6.

I switched from Cable internet to DSL and saved about $15 a month.

I got a different cable tv package with the same company and saved about $15

I dumped call waiting and switched long distance service on my landline phone. That saved about $10.

First of all, you are on the right path by looking for ways to cut down the expenses. This is the difficult part for most people because they don't realize the need for this.

Now coming to how you can do this. Following are some of the suggestions:

- Don't buy new stuff if you can live with used stuff which can be easily found in garage sales, craigslist or thrift shops. Just some examples of used items which are really easy to find: Books, DVDs, CDs, Little Kids Toys, Sports Equipment, Tools, Cars etc..
- Automobile gas is expensive these days. Try public transport wherever available. If you want to drive your own vehicle, try this - remove excess weight from car, don't drive too fast, use gas cards, use overdrive gear whenever you can, don't idle and properly secure gas cap
- Change all light bulbs in your household. Use CFL instead of incandescent bulb
- Use deals with mail-in rebate to your advantage
- Cut down electricity bills by switching off appliances you are not using, turn off your computers when not in use, take shorter showers
- Don't ever go to beauty salon. Cut your hairs at home

I found these tips at:

re-evaluate all your bills. Shop for car insurance to make sure the policy you chose long ago is still the best and cheapest one for your situation today. re-evaluate life insurance needs and cut back coverage if you don't still need it. consider reducing or canceling services like cable TV, internet, or cell phones.

Bargain shop - use coupons and shop the sales. Cut the extras - like getting your nails done regularly or the high priced hair dresser...

shop thrift stores, why buy new when used is just as good? grow ur own veggies if you can, buy dry foods in bulk, turn off power to unused appliances by using power strips (computers, tvs, anything that has a light is always on). use compact bulbs, insulate windows, use a cloths line instead of dryer. lower thermostat in winter, raise thermostat in summer. get a pellet stove ( that could pay for itself in 1 winter nowadays)

Cut back on cable..for instance only get basic cable with a few channels instead of many channels.

If you have cell phones, cut down to a lower plan and use less minutes.
Don't eat out as much, or go do pleasurable things like the movies. And if you do, find a discount theater and just buy tickets. Skip the popcorn and soda.

Set a grocery budget and stick to it.

Try not to drive as much. Do all your errands on one day of the week.

Buy some floor fans or celing fans to help circulate the air in your home and use the AC less. If you can, leave windows open at night and close them mid morning. This helps cool the house off a great deal and therefore the AC has to run less.

If you have home phone service, cancel the caller ID and voicemail and other useless features. Of you if you have cell phones, do like us and completly turn the home phone service off..

40% pay cut is alot. I hope you guys do not suffer..Good luck.

Turn off the light when not in use. Unplug appliances when not in use, especially the satellite. Buy store brands instead of name brands at the grocery. Always remember that the "economy size" is not always the most economical. Sugar is a good example of this. Combine trips in the car. Use "black out" drapes to keep heat and cold from coming in the windows. It's the little things that will make the biggest differences.

You can get free stuff and discount stuff on MogulList.com the have links to everything! They also add new stuff everyweek.

grocery coupons
take the bus instead of your car because gas is SO expensive
cut credit cards or only charge up to $60 a month on them to keep credit in good standing
get a basic phone line with no frills
look for cheaper deals on internet access and cable
only buy what you need (no CDs, DVDs etc)
buy no-name foods where you can
use your cell phone ONLY for emergencies (if you have one)
or cut it completely if you don't need it.
buy food in bulk if you have a big family (Sam's Club)

Let the Butler and chauffeur go and sell the second Rolls Royce. But keep a sense of proportion. No need to give up your skiing holidays in Switzerland, or anything like that..
