Don't know if you can do this but invest it in stocks, bonds, cd's, savings.

Or go and buy coins. In time those will increase in value.

Vintage toys 80's and older are good things to spend it on.

Don't spend it all in one place though.

You didn't say what the project is for, so it's difficult to answer. I would say that if you just want to "blow" the $$, go get a big screen TV and a sound system to go with it. And TONS of movies and popcorn!!
In real life, depending on your age now I would recommend that you spend half and put half away for your future. ONE of many things I regret is that I figured I would work and have a paycheck for the rest of my life. WRONG! I was disabled and had NO money towards retirement. Even a low paying savings bond would have been better... Shoot, for 6 grand you could get the TV, the sound system AND a $6,000. savings bond! (You pay 3,000 for the bond and in 20 or 25 years it's worth $6,000). Spend wisely, but have fun!

Its not clear to me whether my first answer would be right for the project, but...

I'd say take $500 for spending, put $500 in an account in case you need money to "borrow from yourself" and put the other $5000 in a savings account that would give you as much interest as possible. A variation of that might be to put one of the $500 I mentioned into stocks if you knew you could get some could advice on where to invest (and don't put it all into one thing).

If you really have to spend the money, you should try to spend it on things that will offer you the potential of bringing in more money or else that would contribute to your general security.

A computer on which you could do college work or from which you could do a telecommuting job would be a good investment.

Some stocks are a good investment.

You could do something like find bargain-priced products and re-sell them for a profit. You wouldn't have to do this as a job. You could just kind of put the money away, and if you saw great deal on something (like, say, a car that someone just wants to get rid of because they bought a new one and they're not looking for much money on the old one) you could buy it, advertise it for sale, and make a profit.

Spending the money on any classes that would give you either a certification in some area and would let you get a job that pays well would be a good thing to spend it. Spending on classes that would get you credits toward a degree (if you already have some and need more to finish) - good investment.

If you know you'd make a excellent sales person you could use some money to buy something, such as some kit or start-up materials, in order to sell a product. Direct sales and other sales situations often require you buy some start-up materials.

In related situations, you could use it to pay for a license to do some job or if there's any business you could start with as little as $6,000 you could use it for that. (You could start up a newsletter about something you're interested in or start-up a babysitting service or a data-entry business and use the money for supplies, advertising, and the relatively little bit of equipment you'd need.)

If there's something that is in a house that needs repair and that is costing money (such as poorly insulated windows that make the heat bills go up) spending on that type of thing makes sense. Also, if a person owns a house and spends to fix it up in a way that will increase it value that's a good way to spend money.

Sometimes spending one lump of money all in one place may make it more useful than dividing it up and spending it on, say, 60 things that cost $100 each. This is where you have to prioritize and think out the benefits (how much better off will you be in some way as a result of each expenditure and how much can it provide some form of growth to you or your finances in some way).

the wise thing is to save it and let it accure interest. but if you have to spend it, then a down payment on a house or a car, or an entertainment system with surround sound, or a day at the spa. or new clothes, jewlery, or computer. have fun.

Call or log-on to Vanguard. They'll help you place it depending on your goals. Alternatively, spend it on a good ski/snowboard trip.

An awesome computer and printer, jewelry, a big screen TV, a digital camera - I could go on and on because I love to spend money!!!

hrhtheprincessofeire
You could go to The Heifer Project http://www.heifer.org/ and purchase an ark of animals for needy people. Having livestock animals will allow them to provide food, clothing, and other necessities for themselves, as well as animals that reproduce. They can share the benefits of the livestock with their families and community. Wouldn't it be so awesome to know that with your $6000 you were helping an unlimited amount of people? I think it's an awesome example to set with your project -- that you are helping to stop world hunger, for REAL!
Good luck!
