Set up an ING account www.ingdirect.com it saves money at a high interest rate and lets you make automatic deposits. You don't think about the money being in there and its not as liquid as a normal bank account so it takes a few days to get to. You will save money faster this way. |

This is a two step process. The first is to sit down and create a budget by looking at all of your necessary expenses and your income. Leave yourself some wiggle room for spending money, and figure out what would be left over.
Then login to your bank online and have your bank sweep the leftover money into a separate savings account on a bi-weekly or monthly basis. Preferably on the days you get paid.
That way you will adjust to living within your means, while building wealth.

I don't always buy named brand products from the grocery store- store brands typically are just as good. I don't over indulge either- including going out, like to restaurants and etc, no dessert for me. I have a savings account and I have it automatically transferred money from my checking to my savings every month to save- suppose to be for my apartment (for furniture and etc), when ever I get that. I do really good on not touching it the majority of the time. Limit the amount of driving I do over the weekend, gas is expensive. I'm sure I do other things that are sub-conscience that I can't even remember I do anymore. |

We've drastically reduced the amount of money we spend on food by clipping coupons and going through the sale circulars for the local grocery stores (we're lucky enough to have three supermarkets very close to us). Each week, we go through the circulars, mark the items we need or use regularly, and plan out all of our meals for the week. Then, we come up with a shopping list for each store, and get only those items. Certain items (paper goods, toiletries, some frozen foods) we buy in bulk; we go to Costco once a month.
Using this method, we cut our food spending from over $200/week to about $40-50/week. It's made a huge impact on our spending, and reduced a lot of stress. |

I've recently come into some money problems and these are what I've come up with:
1. I've cancelled my netflix and got a library card. Most libraries have movies you can check out for free. Some even offer free or discount passes for area museums and the like, so when I feel like going out somewhere and treating myself, it won't be as expensive.
2. I use coupons.
3. I don't buy coffee in the morning anymore, I make it. I also make my lunch every day. This is by far the biggest hidden expense I've managed to cut out of my budget. It saves me $50 a week!
4. If you live in a state where you have bottle returns, save your soda cans and return them. Not only are you recycling, you're getting some money back.
5. I shop around for gas. I pass around 7 gas stations on my way to work in the morning, and I now know from doing my research where the cheapest place will be for gas.
6. Check your voicemail from a landline. Make non-essential calls after 9PM if possible so you won't lose precious cellphone minutes. Don't dial 411. |

every check you get... put some in an envolope and mark GAS and use that for gas. use some for GROCERIES and also BILLS put the rest either in your account and/or in an emergency fund |

My best habit is buy things I can afford, budget your money strictly and always save at least a little amount.
Cut your lifestyle down, a lot of people live above what they can afford....hence a small part of our economies current crisis. |

Buy only what you can afford.
Stay away from credit cards because the finance charges will cause you to pay twice for what you purchase.
Live within your means. If you want more purchasing power, work overtime, get another job, or start a part time business.
Always save for an emergency or unexpected expense because they will always happen.

Well I love buying food when I'm out and I've learned to pack food with me. Especially my favourite foods that are healthy like clementines and apples.
When it comes to clothes, I think about how many times I can wear it, what I can pair it with that I already own, and if I really need it/if I have something similar. |

I took my credit cards out of my wallet and I treat my savings deposit as a bill. Every two weeks, I pay all of my bills AND transfer funds to my savings.
I chose a savings account with my investment company. That way I don't pull savings out (it takes 48 hours to transfer funds).
I maintain an annual budget so that I know where I am and where I'll be, which helps me prepare for big expenses. For example, I'm currently working on a small remodel of my condo and I'm paying for it all with cash (including new furniture). |
