Pay yourself first, meaning take the money out of each paycheck (preferably automatically) and put it somewhere else immediately. Then just tell yourself you have to survive on whats left. Your mind will probably go to great lengths to make due on the rest if it has to. |

College is a major ripoff. But they are like Dentists you got no choice. You need the ticket. I applaud you for seeking ways of saving money. because you are smart enough to ask this group for help then I trust you'll have the brains to go to the library and do some research or you could send all your money to me and I'll manage it for you. Please do it yourself.

saving money can be a difficult challenge for some. Common tips are
-pay your self first (remove the funds to another account striaght from your paycheck before you have a chance to spend it).
- take you credit cards out of your wallet so you can only buy something if you have cash with you, then only carry limiited amount of cash.
-don't buy on impulse. Only buy what you intended to shop for. If you see something you'd like. Don't buy it immmediately. wait to see if the following day you still want it.
-keep a log of your spending. see at the end of the month if the purchases you made were really as great as you thought they would be, and how much was frivilous.
-have a friend monitor the log with you. This will create some more discipline.

Keep in your mind if it is a need or a want, limit yourself to a certain amount and once gone NO MORE SPENDING until next payday, also use coupons they do help, get a savings account and have money automatically deducted from your paycheck into the account. Take the money out of the account before going to college, and then apply for grants and college scholarships. You will need the money saved for the extra college expenses like books which are pricey. Plan now for the expenses ahead. And learn to shop where things are lower priced. Yard sales and real sale shops do have great designer clothes and purses. Just recently purchased two designer purses for two dollars each, what a bargain! Best Wishes and Happy Saving! If you save correctly you will have plenty for school. Make saving you biggest priority. |

I have the same problem.
What helps me is to put my money into a CD account.
Every time you get a thousand dollars put it in a CD and make it end on the year you go to school or so. (i.e you have 11 months until you go to school--put it in an 11 month CD; you have 4 months 'til school--put it in a 4 month CD.
Also, rewarding yourself when you get 1,000, but only when you get a thousand, and no sooner.
I find that this helps. |

Don't carry any cash and trade in your debit card for a regular ATM card. If you need money you get to think about what your buying whil you walk to the ATM. This should slow you down a little bit. Open an acount at an online bank lke ING, they give you a much higher interest rate, and put money in it at least twice a month.

I wish I could trade you lives for a momment, to be a shopaholic is my ultimate daydream, just kidding. Try sitting down with your parents and making a realistic projected budget of your first month at college. Then take that final amount and triple it. Put the tripled amount into your savings and no matter what happens do not touch it until you have a true emergency like your car dies. It will help you to know that if something happens that your money is there and you will feel good to have reached your savings goals now that you have clearly defined them. |

Stop talking like your spending is a disease that you can't do anything about. If that's true, you don't need to be asking a question like this on a message board. You need to see a shrink.
As for the old pay yourself first crap, its just that, crap. People whp try that end up in worse shape than ever. They stop spending their cash and start using credit cards |

Divide and conquer. Divide your paycheck. Put half into savings. Open a checking account for it or find a place to put it. Do not touch that money until you need it for college. Divide the rest according to what you need it for, like food, clothes, random stuff. Limit how many clothes you buy. If you buy five shirts a week, cut it down to two or three. And buy things on sale instead of for full price. Eat out less often. It saves you a ton of money. If you have trouble at sales, just don't go. If you go, think about whether or not you would buy something on sale if it was full price. |

When you get paid, immediately (within a day) go to a bank and put your money in a 3, 6 or 9 month CD (savings account.)
It will be a pain to take it out early and you'll get penalized if you do.
Do this at different banks, making it even more difficult to get access to your accounts.
Good luck! |

Once you receive your paycheck buy a 22K gold coins. Set them in a security box in the bank (this shall not show that you have any cash on what ever mean possible the university might check in the future) try to stack them properly and aim into filling this security box with gold coins (like challenge your self) once it gets in your mental system you'll start racing yourself into putting some more gold coins in your security box. By the time you reach the period for university payments and all then whatever the gold coins weight is money. Not only what you have spent but mostly the price of gold goes up. |

You have to tell yourself that you cannot afford it. I find that "shopping" online helps me not spend money. I like checking out merchandise and end up convincing myself that I don't really need something else to hang in my closet. You have to focus on your goals and find something else to do. You can't beat yourself up if you struggle with it in the beginning, just get back on track, and keep moving forward. You will need the money in college. Keep that in mind. You'll have a great time in college. Think of that too. |
