What are things that bring my electric bill up?
please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it depends. if you have alot of things that eats up alot of electricity i think you should turn of the thing your not using like if your not in a room and that room had it lights on you should turn it off. or on a hot day you sometimes feel like your melting in your house right. if you had a varanda in your house (or apartment) you can get plant with vines and hang them above your veranda. its called the green curtin. by doing this most of the sun shine will be blocked by the plants and the moisture given off the plants will cool the atmosphere around the veranda (like a rainforest) so you can open you door to your veranda and cool air will fill you house. this is a way you can avoid using alot of electricity for the AC

Believe it or not, if you call them, they can do an analysis (for free) over the phone to see if you're on the best rate plan. If not, you can switch for free (at least everywhere I've ever lived) and end up netting some savings. I did that and am saving around $15 a month that way I guess.

When you find out what rate plan will work best, then try to USE it to your advantage. For example, usually it costs less for residents on the weekend--so that's a good time to do the laundry, a thorough vacuuming, make meals for the week and freeze, etc. Use the electric when it's less costly.

Insulation can save you money over time--do you have enough? Have you checked for air leaks? Pay particular attention around window areas, etc. as you can lose 40% of your heating/cooling through there as I've heard.

We have gas heat and gas is ridiculously expensive. I have the furnace set to go on at 65 degrees. We are using ELECTRIC (more reasonable rate--the gas is cheaper thing is NOT necessarily true) space heaters now and of course we wear more clothing. Flannel and microfibre blankets keep you warmer. Dress in layers. Drink hot tea or coffee to help warm you from the inside.

If you have really old appliances, they're not energy efficient. May be time to get new ones--a hit now, but saves over long run.

Finally change to CFLs--they are a bit pricier to buy but will use less energy. You do NOT have to change every bulb out--pick the ones you use the most. Just don't keep turning them on and off every few minutes as they take a surge of power to go on. So if in the course of an hour you'll turn them on and off 5 times, just leave them on.

If you're close to needing something like a water heater (very much an energy hog) you might want to consider going tankless. With installation probably looking at a couple of grand or more, so check into that tax credit you may qualify for.

What really adds up are all the specialty fees the electric companies tax on to the bill. Ridiculous!

example of hydro costs at 6.2 cents killowatt.(a killowatt is 1000 watt) so if you have a 1000 watt light on for 1 hour it will cost you 6.2 cents.
for a 100 watt light it will cost you 0.62 cent an hour!! thats not even a penny!
for a 1500 watt heater...9.3 cents an hour.so you can calculate everything very easily.
watch for the heating, the dryer, the stove and the hot water tank, these takes the most energy.you can check the energy saving tips on the internet that will help you with saving a lot more.
in the winter its very important to check that no cold air comes into the house, check the doors and the windows.

Things you plug in. Unplug everything that is not being used at any given time.

a bad performance refridge. turning lights off and on constantly,,which is worse than just leaving one on. however a timer would help..to cut down..electric.

switching things on and off as the power surge costs more so don't turn things off as often and when you do make sure its NOT on standby ,Switch off at the mains overnight when not in use

An electric heater, an appliance that you have started using that is an older model, such as a freezer. Look for things that have changed since before your bill went up!

Biggest electric saver, the new 13 watt light bulbs that replace 60 watts! Even though they cost about 4 for $10.00, they are worth the investment and last for years. If you haven't switched, do so right away..You will start to save from day one, I promise.

I have dealt with this problem also and this is what I did to lower my bill......it worked.
Check the rubber seals on your fridge and freezer. If they are loose, cracked or just plain worn out, replace them. Your appliance has to work overtime to compensate for this.
I turn off my computers when not in use.
I changed to the new low watt-long lasting light bulbs. This alone saved me 20.00 per month on my bill. They also last forever. I changed out every bulb in my home 2 years ago this month and I haven't had to replace one yet.
Become the "light police" in your home and school the rest of your family to turn the light off when they leave the room.
If you use a space heater anywhere in your home, use it for a very short period of time. These things just suck the electric.
It's really just a matter of looking around your home and turning off what your aren't using. We have 3 tv sets. Most of the time we only watch one. If I walk into my girls room and see the tv on or a radio playing it goes off if there isn't a body in there listening or watching.
Turn your thermostat down during the day while your are at work. This alone can reduce your bill 10 percent over a years time. In the summer turn it up if you have central air.
When you do laundry make sure your washing and drying full loads. Do your laundry later in the evening when energy demand isn't as great.
Hope this helps.

Using regular lightbulbs instead of the energy-efficient ones. Leaving things on when you are not using them.
Items that have heating elements, or motors.

Anything that runs on electricity will increase your bill!

Keeping unnessary lights on in mid day..... Tv on for long periods of time, Heres a biggie keeping chargers thats done charging in the out let so if u are done chargeing your cell phone, unplug the charger

Hope this helps lol

Hot water heaters, washing machines, TV, irons, electric kettle , electric oven etc. Some of these have a rating of 1000w+ , so when switched on over an extended period of time will causes the electric bill to balloon .
