Hi,

I suppose it depends on how much money you're out to save and who willing you are to make sacrifices. Here are a few things I do that require little effort but end up helping a lot.

1. Skip the fancy coffee/smoothie/whatever. If you're like me, you "need" coffee every morning. Try brewing your own. A daily stop at a coffee bar adds up quickly. $2 per cup times 365 days a year = a lot of money.

2. Buy generic. When possible, buy the cheaper alternative. You may come off looking a bit frugal when people come over and see the no-name shampoo in your shower, but you will save money and get basically the same product.

3. Shop around. Take a look at what you're paying for cable, cell phone, internet access, etc. Do your research, and if you can find a better deal, call your current provider and tell them. Offer them the chance to match the deal. If you're polite, odds are you'll be successful.

There are, of course, tons more tips out there. I've included a link below to a site that specializes in helping folks save money. Enjoy!

Mike

dont eat out as much, shop the bargins on clothes and food. dont buy things that you really dont need. Dont go to the bar all the time.

Garage sales--I buy all my clothes there, dishes, tools, I've even found caulking, doors, windows.. Much cheaper than resale stores, even. Also, unplugging the TV/DVD player, etc. saves on some electricity since they use it even when they are not on. Libraries are the greatest--never have to buy a book, movie or CD & they answer all your questions for free. And we make most of our food at home--tastes better & better for you as well as being cheaper.

well i started a high interest savings account. they take my money out once a month. and its paperless so i kind of forget about it - the money is really accumulating for once.

also to save money - cut up credit cards! and don't go into stores.

When i thought about saving money...I thought about my grandparents back in the days. They didn't have such easy access to bank accounts like we do with ATM machines literally EVERYWHERE... in there lies the problem. ATM should be called ABM(automatically broke machine)....when I thought about this it pissed me off ...so I thought of a method that would require some serious discipline.

What worked for me was to withdraw at the beginning of the week what would cover the entire week...which meant I had to budget...and not carry my ATM card around with me. Which doesn't mean I had to live off of peanut butter sandwiches all week...i just based the withdraw on (starbucks twice within that week and maybe wendy's twice...the rest was food from home). The going out doing stuff(entertainment was limited)...because I was on a budget.

Ok, and then when the weekends came I would withdraw based on the activities planned or not planned for the weekend. Which meant if I spent all the money on friday nite...I would be jacked up for the rest of the weekend.

What happens in using this method is that you start to condition yourself towards impulse purchasing and the frivolous lifestyle.....when the conditioning set's in....you realize that you have an actual bank account with money in it....and you're no longer living check to check....as a matter of fact...it becomes more of a challenge to see how long you can go by living within your own means.
I hope this helps...it works for me ...til this day.

How much money you save depends on your lifestyle. How much you should save depends on your age, the number of dependants, the kind of lifestyle you want to lead when you retire and inflation ($10 today will be worth less than $ 10 tommorrow).
To save money, i would start by examining my life and find out where I can save money by cutting costs and extra impulsive, frivolous spending. Then I would calculate how much I can save every month, keeping in mind to put some money apart for emergencies. This money I would invest in :
a) a savings account with a good interest rate,
b)a fixed deposit with good interest rates ( fixed deposits have mandatory time periods from 1 year to 5 years, etc, so you cannot withdraw money unless time period is up),
c)a mutual fund (do research on this thoroughly before investing),
d) post office savings schemes,
e)government bonds,etc

Start small, and you should be able to save.

I hope this helps. I cant tell you what to cut costs on because I dont know you. Sorry if it sounds rude.Best of luck!

Try opening up an ING account. Its a savings account with high interest. You can set up it automatically be transfered from your checking into the ing account and earn interest the first day of every month.
