There is a website you can join called "The Grocery Game". It's not something that is really useful for me and my husband, but if you're buying for a big family, it's great! It shows you the latest prices on what you buy at the differenct stores in your area. It's really great. I have a couple of friends who do this every week, and have saved a TON of money!
Also, look at when you buy your gas. My shop is right next to a gas station. Gas goes up about 3 or 4 cents a gallon virtually EVERY Friday afternoon. So, buy your gas before Friday!
Look at the products you buy. There are several things that we have become accustomed to using the name brands on, when really, does it matter? Things like sugar, salt, flour, etc. Really evaluate your brands. If you can go with an off brand, do it.
Look for recipes that make a lot of food- cheap- and will freeze. Some soups, and some casseroles. It doesn't take much more money to increase the number of servings. Freeze in smaller batches, big enough for your family for a serving. Then, you have meals that only need to be heated up, and you've saved money by making lots up front. |

Well, I canceled cable TV a few months ago. In the process of selling the TV right now, since it is unusable anyways!
Cancelling one of the cell phones (yes, I have two for some stupid reason), so that'll save me $70 a month.
I switch dog foods when I find a good coupon for one, so I have been switching them on every bag or two.
I have been forced to curb my addiction to shopping...
Oh, and I moved into my brother's 2 flat, so he let's me do work for him in place of some of the rent that I would usually pay. |

Pack Lunch
Not ordering out for dinner/pizza. We have limited ourselves to doing this only once every 2 weeks instead of pizza once a week. If we need to save more, we'll cut back again.
Much more careful at the grocery. I cut coupons, I buy less "fun stuff" Snacks etc.
A couple dinners a week are now "easy" - Grilled Cheese and Soup instead of a normal meal I'd cook.
We don't toss leftovers like we did. Those go for lunch the next day.
I'm not driving my truck (17MPG) other than to work. I take the Corolla (35MPG) for errands and I do them all at once.
No more clothes shopping for me - on a whim. If I "need" something, I'll go get it. But I'm not heading to the mall to just look around anymore. (DAMMIT)
If we need to cut back more, I will. We have lots of extras we can ditch. This has helped enough that we are not really feeling it. If things get worse, Netflix goes, change our cell plan, Direct TV can go to the basic level for awhile....

Free food for the dogs.
I have switched my pets almost completely over to raw diet and am always looking for ways to get free meat. Lots of hunters here in the "Northwoods", so it can be done if one is willing to track it down.
Also eating out less....working on that one. |

I skimp on eating out. Really, it's been a horrible habit since I started working full time...it's so easy to run out and grab lunch instead of making it myself. So, I just buy $25 worth of groceries that will last me about 3 weeks rather than spend $30/week on eating out for lunch.
Also, Belle hasn't been to doggy day camp in a while because that's $25/week I can save.
I take $50 out every paycheck that can be spent on things I want to do...a movie, eating out, having some drinks with friends...but when it's gone, it's gone. You have to be REALLY disciplined to do that and I've done pretty well so far.
Stupid economy.
EDIT: "We only eat maybe once a week whereas it used to be at least 3-4 times a week because of our schedules. "
Crysti, you must be losing a crapload of weight eating only once a week!! ;-) |

Love is an American Bulldog
|
I actually started clipping coupons *gasp*...but hey, it helps. I also don't eat out as much as I used to and if we do it's not someplace where we will easily spend $75.00. Now it's just the diner maybe once a month.
I also make the kids lunch every day as opposed to giving them money to buy lunch at school, that saves me a ton.
I have also been putting money away every week from my paycheck to save for Christmas ( Christmas always kills us financially ), but this year I think we can actually breathe alittle easier.
I also shop on Ebay for my kids clothes, that's something I don't tell alot of people but it saves me money not buying new clothes.
I used to go into a different town at least twice a week to have breakfast with friends and do some shopping while I was there but with the price of gas the way it is, that has stopped too. I might meet them twice a month now for breakfast instead.
I honestly think it's easy to save if you really put your mind to it. You have to want to save money, and if you really want something bad enough, it will happen.
One more thing, I don't let my husband do the grocery shopping....God that man buys things nobody eats and wastes a lot of money on junkfood....that task has been taken away from him! |

Staying at home more on the weekends. We used to go to the movies, go out to eat, go bowling, etc. all the time. Now we stay home on the weekends and maybe have some friends over to eat or something. We only eat maybe once a week whereas it used to be at least 3-4 times a week because of our schedules. No new toys for the dogs every time I go to a store. No clothes shopping in a while. Taking left-overs for lunch the next day.
I'm trying to talk myself into getting rid of the internet and text messaging on my phone, but, I'm kind of lost without them.
I wish my husband would let me sell our tvs. We have a 42 inch Sony Bravia and a 32 inch some other brand of flat screen (forgot)....It wouldn't bother me to not have a tv at all. |

Taking the train to work rather than driving, The train is $125/ mo...parking alone was 150, we got rid of one of our cars so are down to one but we are saving like $500 a month between gas, car payment and insurance. |

Well let's see, I'm sitting here in my sweatshirt freezing to death. We have a big house, so by lowering the heat a bit we can save a lot of money. I'm kind of jealous watching my Betta swim around in his 80 degree tank...
We also don't buy as much random crap as we used to. That kills me.
However as of yet our family hasn't been too affected. Like I've said we just don't buy as many things, and for now we're alright. |

I quit eating out at lunch time and started to bring my lunches, I was spending minimum $10 a day for lunch and that adds up.
I've become a coupon queen, buying the paper on Sunday where its a 2 for 1 deal so I get double the coupons.
I'm a Craigslist junkie, instead of going out and spending a crap load on something I want I look for it used on Craigslist.
Buy the necessities in bulk at Sams or Costco which saves me a bit of money.
Moved in with my parents to pay off debt (Not paying rent saves us a crap load) but it is a pain, 4 adults 2 dogs and 3 cats in one house. It gets rather nerve racking at times but its only for a year.. |

BI-CYCLE BI-CYCLE BI-CYCLE I ride my bike whenever I can. If my car gets 20 mpg (it gets more but we'll keep it simple) and I ride my bike to school 2.5 miles out and back, I've saved a buck. Hubby rides his bike to work, so he also saves a dollar a day by doing so.
HOW LOW CAN YOU GO I've made it a game to see how low I can go on the utility bills -- I try to go lower each month by turning out lights, line drying instead of using the dryer, etc.
LEFTOVERS AGAIN? I made a great soup last night using up leftover vegetable broth, tomato soup, leftover spaghetti (with sauce), and a can of beans. I spiced it up with parsley, basil, and oregano and yum
A DOLLAR IS ALOT OF MONEY I've been broke before and learned that a quarter, a dollar is alot of money when you don't have any. I continue to act like I don't have any and am able to save.
Remember: "If your outgo is greater than your income, your upkeep is your downfall". Live by this rule and you won't "fall down." |

We don't spend much in the area of entertainment as it is. We go to the movies maybe once a month, tops. However, we do eat out a lot, which we'll probably cut down on soon.
I buy generic where I can. I never used to buy generic anything, but now I've started to buy a lot of store brand items. We buy a lot of home furnishings and decorations from Target, which is usually much cheaper than Bed, Bath and Beyond or Macy's.
Now, here's the weird part. This is something I've done since I was a kid. I never pay in exact change for ANYTHING. I save all change and let it accumulate. Every once in a while, when I want to buy a little something extra that I didn't budget for, I go to the change for mad money. I roll it up and bring it to the bank for cash. It's usually between $70 and $100- not a hell of a lot but it's nice when it's the difference between buying that little something that you didn't plan on but want to buy. I've recently started saving singles too. I started 2 weeks ago and have about $45 in singles right now. We also have Keep the Change with Bank of America, which also isn't much, but it's something :)
I try to buy clothes more frequently, rather than having a new season sneak up on me so I end up having to spend a lot on a whole new wardrobe at once. It's counter-intuitive but works for me. |

Glad you asked this question!! I love it when people are trying to save money.
I have decided to live 'more simply'. My husband and I share meals when eating out. I have stopped my clothes shopping - I don't need anymore clothes anyway. We make a cake for birthdays, instead of buying. We stopped buying soda and drink water (that alone is a cost saver). Wash our clothes in cold water.
Ladies: I am growing out my bangs, to save on haircuts. *LOL* |

Memphis Belle ~ Roll on Spring
|
I decided to postpone adding a third Dobermann to the family for the time being. I had hoped to move this year to a house with more space, but the housing market is flat.
At the moment I buy quite a lot of my clothes/shoes on Ebay, new and so much cheaper than the shops.
Recently changed my mobile phone plan to a cheaper one.
Also postponed my planned Autumn holiday until next Spring, when I hope the economy may have started to improve.
My Dobermanns food and insurance are items that I will not compromise on. I did buy JJ a new prong collar from the USA and tried not to feel too guilty!
