What benefits can we claim?
My wife has been on maternity pay following the birth of our daughter. This has now run out so she has applied for Jobseekers Allowance but this has been denied because she's not able to work full time. You know, what with the taking care of the baby thing.

We get child tax credits (not working tax credits because, shock, horror, I earn nearly £18,000 a year and that's enough for a family of 3 to live on apparently) and, erm that's it. We also don't qualify for housing benefit or council tax benefits.

Is there anything else anyone knows of that we can try to claim? I know it'll be hard because we're married, white and I work for a living but there must be something we've missed and the staff at the local office are about one step up from useless!

Check www.entitledto.co.uk (it might be .com i'm not sure off the top of my head). You fill in all yours and your partners details and it will tell you what benefits you are entitled to in your personal circumstances!

Happy
A useful web site is: www.entitledto.com just fill in the boxes according to your circumstances and will guide you. If your getting tax credits you won't qualify for Income Support but you should still qualify for HB (if renting) and CT benefit. Another great place for help is the CAB

Why do you think you should be owed something. There are four of us and we get by on less than that a year. Think yourself lucky.

Try this website ...
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/BeginnersGuideToBenefits/DG_4016805

I think you have to complete an online form to see what you qualify for.

Yeah i would of thought that there is something you can do 2.

Maybe its worth ringing up some benefit offices or something.

Yes i understand about it being hard because your white and working.

I get pissed off with the immagrents coming into this country and stealing everything. But thats a completlely differnt story

You answered your own question you are British white married and working, so therefore that means you are not entitled to anything!

JSA is given based on National Insurance contributions, not whether she's ABLE to work full time, but whether she worked full time prior to having the baby (ie paid enough NI).

(Gosh £18k a year is supposed to support a family of 3? Ha you'd be better off quitting your job! That is truly ridiculous. I am shocked.)

Have you tried the CAB? or failing that could you have a look at finding better paid job?

bunny
when i was in a similar position last year i contacted the c.a.b, they advised me as to what i was entitled to and how much i could get. they also contacted the relevant departments and helped me with other financial matters.

[Edit]

I had just written a pretty indepth answer about what you can and can't claim and the reasons behind it... but then I re-read your question and decided you do not deserve to be answered.

What the hell does the fact that you are "white" have to do with not getting benefits?

Racist.
