What can I do? Need advice and direction?
Im a 23 yr old male.I live in Cornwall, house share with a friend and have a young son.Im sure im not the only one in this boat but what can i do...i'm skint?

Right,so here's my problem.I get paid monthly and once i have been i pay my bills. This leaves me with £30 for the whole month in my pocket (and if anyones lived in Cornwall this don't get far). With this money i have to try and feed myself and my little boy and maybe take him out swimming or something. Now,my little boy doesn't live with me but i have him every other weekend staying over and every evening. In turn most of that £30 is spent on him(on top of £150 maintenance). Now i don't have any money to buy food for myself.I rely on people at work bringing me food in (sad i know).Ive applied for working tax credits as im on a low wage but i don't think i'll qualify for them as i'm not over 25 and my boy doesn't actually live with me.Ive cut back on everything just to try and save a few pennys. Anyone have any advice? Please

Weekends i don't have him i work and i work in the evenings after i have him too!

get a job that pays well.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you good at your job? Talk to your boss about a pay raise, otherwise, a lot of companies will lend their employees money and deduct it back from their salary, usually interest free.

When your son comes over I'm sure you probably want to take him to McDonald's etc, maybe cut that out for a while. If you're driving to get him maybe your ex would meet you half way? Save on petrol. Pretty crappy situation if you don't have time for another job. You'll see a way.

Sorry to sound so grim, but you either need a better paying job, or an additional job....
If you only have your son everyother weekend, then it sounds like you have plenty of time to spare....I mean, I am sure you are working full time now...but with the little bit of money that you have left over....well, it's just not gonna work....YOU NEED ANOTHER PART TIME JOB....even if it's just one or two days or nights a week....
Is there any chance of you working some overtime at your present job? If you don't know...then go to your boss...explain to him or her that you want extra hours and see what happens...Maybe you will be able to do the extra hours at the job you already have....good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Is one of your bills a cell phone? And do you really need it? I think the advice to go to the maintenance board is good.
- I've always thought if I was single I'd rent a cheap room somewhere, rather than have all the expenses that come with an apartment.. But I don't even know if that's feasible anymore.
Best of luck to you..

It is tough, hang in there. I'm a single mum and have been through this. I found ways to entertain my son that cost nothing........painting with water and a brush on the footpath..making toys out of toilet roll cardbord and boxes...and never underestimate.a sheet over the table as a cubby house!! Keep an eye out at local shops an schools for fetes and sausage sizzles(don't know what the cornwell equivalent would be!!) When I didn't have my son and after he was asleep I took in ironing. But as a single mum my biggest problems were.....changing light globes, changing batteries in fire alarms, changing washers in dripping taps and cleaning gutters. I know Cornwell has single Mums....perhaps you could consider a small business handy man, List the items you can manage (ps. most don't require expensive tools, just some height and knowhow) for say $5 you could fit light globes, batteries(provided by them) and be in and out to the next job in no time. Could be done on way home from work ect.....while there talk about local activiites for kids and where to get the cheapests meals ect......some mums may have fresh vegies ect and you could accept them as payment.....don't limit yourself....elderley women alone also have need of some help and may also bake fresh food as payment for a litlle gutter clearing!! All the best I hope this helps.....

Have you considered changing your job? Something that pays a bit more.

Maybe you could hust get a small part time job as well to give you some extra cash in your pocket.

Try and cut down your costs on your bills. There maybe other companies that are cheaper/have better deals and offers.

Explain to whoever looks after your son (his mother?) that you are really struggling. Maybe ask if he can eat at their house before he comes over at the weekend? or maybe they could help you out with some money.

I think you should go to the near welfare office and tell the truth of your situation. You will get help or even the cash of emergency payment from the Cornwall welfare department. Good luck!

Gen
Try moving somewhere else that has more job openings.
If that dosn't work try aplying for other jobs that don't need much and still pay enough.
Best of luck.

Can you work a part time job? You have him every evening? Shouldn't the maintenance be decreased if you are caring and feeding (I'm sure) him this often?
Keep working toward the working tax credit and also apply for public assistance.
If maintenance is child support then it seems you are actually paying double, which I'm sure you are glad to be able to do as much as you possibly can. You sound like a good man to take on this responsibility at such an early age. Good luck, as a lot of men are running from their responsibilities, not seeming to care if the children go without.

Lisa T
if you are going throught the CSA with maintenance, have a word with them as they may be able to reduce your payments, considering you have to feed your child while he is staying with you, failing that, are you able to work the odd evenings in the week?

You need to get a second job, something cash in hand.

Life is hard because the global human population exceeds the carrying capacity of the earth. Agitate for some kind of mutual coercion to cut the birth rate to "very rare" until the population falls to within what can be provided for.
