Nyx | What can I do now to retire comfortably? |
After college I'll be going into accounting, I'm getting an accounting degree, and I'm in my late 20s. I'll graduate college when I'm 30. What can I do now so I can retire comfortably and not have to struggle? Additional Details another thing I live in Nebraska so salaries are usually the same, cost of living is lower than in the west and east coasts so that helps a lot |

Don't be penny smart and dollar stupid. Do research and spend time in saving money on big purchases like house, car, travel, etc. Spending an extra 20 hours of research to save a couple grand on your car will save you lots of money. Then save the money and invest long-term. When you are young, invest in risky ventures such as stocks and 401k. As you grow older, invest in fixed income such as CD's, bonds, and such. |

Start saving in some form weekly from your check. Automatic deposit or self deposit.
If you put it away 1st then you won't miss it when you are paying bills... as it never was included in your accounting of $$.
Do not use it for special occassions. It is left untouched to exponetially grow.
Have a disaster account as well for the Emergencies that can crop up that must be paid for too but would be more than you have available from a paycheck. This can cover Dr visits unexpectedly, car repairs not planned to occur...
If you can put together some kinds of other mini-jobs that create multiple streams of income--all that can be used to save or buy stocks/bonds or other investment products that are safer and do give a return. You could also have a small side job as an accountant for a Restaurant or something and all the $$ that job creates goes into the Retirement fund w/o questions. It could also mean you have a few properties that are providing you income as they pay off the Mortgage you have on them. They continue to generate Funds w/ little work from you. You can make things, grow things, other services that produce $$.
Also consider trade and barter as it saves $$ and allows labor to trade not currency
Live below your means always. Never buy a lot on credit as you know you are paying multiple times for it in interest. Pay cash for small things and save for the big things--debt is not a Finacially sound business plan for anyone now esp.
Tithe to whatever resonates to your belief-- a Church , homeless shelter, food bank, animal rescue....by giving $$ away you create a hole of emptiness that the Universe will fill w/ more $$, the Law of 3 is a good thing--whatever you do comes back to you 3 times as much. Good outward, good back.
Be frugal, share costs w/ others and buy in a Syndicate or group buying.
Buy older not necessarily new. It will not loose so much value as a new thing does.
Do something now so it can work for you for the many earning years you have to come and will be a good stash for when it is time ot say permanent Vacation.
Best wishes |
