terose1 | What can I get my grandchildren for Christmas to teach them about finance that will also be fun for them.? |
I do well with my finances but my children never learned anything from me because they had to file bankrupsy even though they make good wages. I want my grand children to learn early. They are ages 6 and 7. |

thank you for asking a good question.
visit daveramsey.com to look for the Jr's series of books and learning tools for kids.
my oldest reads from these to my youngest and both are smarter than cousins about money.
neither will go to bankruptcy court or debt slavery. |

get them junior monopoly. This will teach them the most important things about finances. The banks own everything (the federal reserve). And its a utter rat race to get ahead. Big windfalls or big bombshells are just a dice roll away. If you happen to go to prison then it becomes like a command post. If you are not cunning and cut-throat then you'll be wiped out, poor and pathetic. You can never show any mercy in the game, its very realistic. |

I"d start with a toy cash register and play money. Also, check with your bank - some of them have special programs for kids and might have some material they could give you. |

Gift cards to their favorite stores. That way, they'll have the fun of buying their own presents, but will learn about the value of a dollar. |

How about a few shares of a company like Disney or Toys 'R Us that they recognize. And then show them how they can watch the value grow over time.
Show them what it was worth on the day they were born. Then, on their birthdays or other special days, add to their portfolio. There is also a mutual fund that specializes in investments for children but I cannot remember which fund family offers it. You should be able to "google" it. |

Do that old math trick with them "would you take a penny a day for a month and double the amount each day, or would you like $100 now"
when they do the math, it really starts to add up over the month and they can see the power of compound investing.
1,2,4,8,16,32,64,etc. at 31 days, it is way, way over the $100 that everyone picks if they don't know the trick. |

You do well with finances but you want us to tell you how to teach them about finances. I don't get because all you have to do is teach your grandchildren what you know. Get them just some FUN toys because there is nothing you are going to do or say that will change their future. If there was, your own children would have done better. Do you see? |

Buy them mutual funds and check on them and follow them together with age-appropriate discussions.
Instead of sending them money for gifts, take them to the bank each time you visit and let them put 20% of whatever you give them into a bank account. |
