People would probably be quick to claim that in a cash only economy debt would be reduced and therefore our lives would be better. I think this is wrong. Credit, whether in the form of credit cards or margin accounts or whatever, is responsible for much of what we take for granted today. Ford borrowed money he didn't have to start the Ford motor company. So did Bill Gates, Vanderbilt and Hewlett and Packard. Even Roy Kroc, McDonald's founder at one time had to borrow against the properties he owned to stay afloat. The point is that credit isn't destructive or not, but that people's irresponsibility is destructive. As some other posters have said though, they learned their lesson. Only borrow when you have to, or when you have carefully weighed the risks. Either way, you are taking a risk.

What a great question. It would keep me from living in a borrowed lifestyle. It would make me focus more on what I really need rather than what I want. It would make me appreciate things I have and things I acquire. It would make me less wasteful. And it would be so much fun to tell the credit card companies where they could stick it.

Personal debt would drop for sure. Credit card fraud wouldn't exist.

Would be no change here. I cut up my credit cards twenty years ago. Was one of the smartest things I ever did.

Hardly any changes would happen in my life. I don't have credit card debt. I learned that lesson a long time ago, when I ran it up to $30,000+ in college. Never again. I pay it off monthly, if I use it at all. So, credit doesn't really do anything for me. I would rather use cash and know how much I have in the bank at all times, than worry about credit.

Hopefully budgeting would be a course required to take. It would affect our economy immensely including our export/importing business contacts. Great Question!

duh. it would force everyone to be responsible with there money. swiping plastic is what is encouraging the trend of debt.

The changes would be for better, because no one could spend money they didn't have; so there would be no debt. We could not live beyond our means, and would only be able to buy what we could afford. Ultimately, it would make us wiser when it came to spending money. We would know how to look for bargains, etc. I imagine that we would be better savers, too. And we would never pay more for an item than the original price, because there would be no interest! With credit cards, sometimes you can end up paying 2-3 times what the item was worth just in the interest! The downside would be for poor people who didn't make enough money to buy the things they needed, so they would have no alternative way of purchasing those things. It would be up to the rest of us to help out the needy.

Personally, I think that would be a great idea (to get rid of credit cards, I mean). I have, unfortunately, fallen into the trap.

I think it would be for the better. Most people don't feel the "pain" of a high sticker price when paying with plastic, be it debit or credit cards. I found an article online that outlines just that :

http://financialbasics.blogspot.com/2006/11/using-cash-to-stay-within-budget.html

That opened up my eyes.

The biggest change is the need to save and protect. In a cash only society, the value of money is usually less due to crime. Criminals know that stealing cash gives them ultimate power, in turn that would raise the cost to protect the money and lower the interest rate that banks can pass on to customers. Lower returns on money mean less people saving money. With no savings comes no "American dream" (i.e No home ownership, no nice vehicle purchases, etc.)

alyssa00_ca
i don't use credit cards, so no changes for me.

FavoredbyU
nothing would change.

topgunpilot22
none I don't even have a credit card I'm 26yrs old

youngturk3389
it wouldn't make much difference in my life, but many people would probably be with less debt, many people use debit and credit cards for purchases under $10! why can't you just go to the bank?

Jo K
I would never be able to afford my condo if I had to pay up front. Also, I would not have been admitted in the emergency room when I fainted near the mall. Thus, if I lived in a cash only economy, I'd be living in a small apartment and my health might be worse.
