What do I do about an unauthorized automatic debit from my checking account?
I just reviewed my checking account and it has an unauthorized automatic debit for a Capital One Card Online Payment. I never authorized this and I don't even have a Capital One card.

Just so there is no confusion, it is not a check purchase or a credit card purchase, but an automatic debit meaning they have my checking account information and just did an electric draft from my account.

If I call my bank, what can I expect them to do for me? I am really stressed about this and really need some advice. Will my bank help me?

I don't think your bank will reverse the charge. You need to take this up with Capitol One - call the number on the charge, or call their customer service number from the website, and ask them why they put thru the charge and demand proof that you authorized the charge - do they have anything you signed or requested for service? If there is no proof you ordered anything from them they should reverse the charge and refund the money to your bank account.

Hi Ashley.

Maybe it was your PETA subscription.

Maybe it was taken out by that school you were going to picket because they served meat to your niece.

Maybe it was a Yahoo penalty for you reporting people all of the time.

Maybe a load of normal people got tried of your hate mongering on this site, got hold of your bank details (in London, as your father was transferred there) and swiped the cash.

Maybe it was your boyfriend who has a flatulence problem.

Or, maybe it was the Moron-people for you over using the word MORON all of the time.

Hope I helped.

first of all it's your money in that bank so get off the stressed out bag already. go to the bank and show them what's happening. if they took the money out of your account and you did not authorize it it also means that they breeched the banks system. this does srtess out banks BIG TIME.

Since the payment was not authorized, this is considered fraud. You need to physically walk into your bank instead of calling and tell them that you did not authorize this charge. They will put you in touch with someone from the fraud department. If this is not your charge, then the bank MUST reverse the charge. Also, have the bank put a stop payment on your account for Capital One. The bank will charge you for this, probably anywhere from $20 - $35. But at least Capital One will not be allowed to take another payment from you again!

Your bank will most likely send you an affidavit of dispute, after filling it out and mailing it back; it will be forwarded to their fraud dept. It is a long process when you go that route. Call Capital One first and tell them you need their help...... be nice..... and as confused as possible. Get all your ducks in a row with regard to who might have your personal information and who would be willing to abuse it before you call anyone. Sadly it could be a friend, family member or someone just stealing your info. Something like that is not usually an honest mistake or typo. Good luck

If it concerns your bank they should help you; if they do not, then ask them for their customer's complaints address.

your bank must have proper authorization for any debits from your account . Call your bank and question the transactions . The bank will investigate and either reverse them or explain to you why the believe they are valid . The bank should be very worried by this since it is very bad advertising if you are telling all your friends what a bad bank it is .

It may be that someone entered an incorrect account number but the bank should have caught that by the account name .
It could be an identity theft issue , you may need your banks help to get your credit report and check on any new accounts in your name .

I would let your bank contact Capital One . They are more likely to respond to an enquiry from the bank.

Contact both your bank asap and Capital One (second), so at least your account is flagged for a disputed charge. It sounds like someone entered the wrong bank information and you got left with a mistaken payment - which should be easily reversible, especially if you don't have a related credit card! Capital One is unfortunately a pretty sketchy credit card company, so you'll probably find that your bank will be way more help. At any rate, don't stress out, it's perfectly normal and you're in the right.

Your bank should help you. Ask them to reverse. And I would also call Capital One.

Well complain, if the deduction is unauthorised then it should not have happened and you should demand an explanation. If the bank refuses to do anything about it cross that bridge etc. In the meantime do not stress, it achieves nothing except raise your BP, just do some deep breathing and calm down there will be time enough to panic later, best of luck BE CALM!!!!!
