wise old owl | What do pensioners in the UK get as a pension (money)? |
|
|

The maximum basic pension (based on National Insurance ontributions) is £87.30 at the moment. Most people will also have their pensions topped up with Additional pension (SERPS or state 2nd pension).
The minimum amount the government says pensioners need to live on is £119.05 for a single person or £181.70 per couple. This can be increased for people with disabilities, caring responsibilities, or housing costs such as a mortgage. Anyone with less income than this can claim Pension Credit as long as they are permenantly resident in the UK.
Its not as simple as saying a pension is X amount of money as it varies widely, but nobody should have less coming in to the household than £119.05/£181.70. But that includes private pensions, maintenance, earnings and any other type of income as well as retirement pension. |

Single person: £87.30; Couple: £139.60 per week. for the 2007 to 2008 tax year.
Not enough. |

It is $87.30pw if you have paid in all your working life and did not miss any payments.
But if your total income from all sources is below something like £120 pw, and your savings are very small, you can then submit to the hated means test and if you pass, you can then get some additional benefits. The upshot is that you will afford to put some margarine on your bread, but not much jam.
The country is rich, as we are told all the time, but the money is needed for bringing democracy to Iraq. |

What sort of pension. There is state pension and private or company pensions. Some get both. It is different for a single person to a couple. Also state pension depends how many years you paid in for it and what extra benefits you paid for, Private pensions also depend on how long and how much you paid. So every one can be different. Some people get by on 60 or 70 pounds a week but get help with rent and council tax. Anyone with very low income gets what are called tax credits to boost their pension a bit. Other people with a higher state pension and a modest private pension could get something like 250 pounds a week, but no extra benefits and would pay full taxes. |

As some of the others have said there is a maximum amount of £87.70 based on the national insurance contributions over your working life. My Mum like a lot of her generation did not do paid work while bringing up the children so her pension is £1.75/week +£5 a year for been over 75. She survives because Dad had a well paid job & a penion that was not robbed by Maxwell or Thatcher.
If you want to be happy when you retire then you need to learn how to create your own wealth or live within your means.

You get the State Pension, provided that you have made enough National Insurance contributions. If, in a given year, you do not make enough contributions, the Dept for Work and Pensions will write to you to give you the option of paying the shortfall. Your employer may also offer a pension scheme which you can join - this involves paying a proportion of you salary into your pension fund. When you retire, usually at age 60 or 65 depending on the company's policy, your annual entitlement will be calculated based on your final salary amount. Insurance companies also offer private pensions which you can take out and pay into monthly, giving you another source of pension income on retirement. Hope this is helpful! |
