What do we do with important paperwork that we found in the trash at our new house?
The paperwork includes a deed to a house (not our house), a mortgage forclosure notice, bank account statements, credit card statements, all sorts of returned check notices. We took them out of the trash because they didn't seem like things that should be disposed of like that, or maybe they shouldn't be in the trash at all. We don't know how to get in touch with the previous tenant who this stuff probably belonged to. We do have a shredder-- should we just shred everything and then throw it out?

If you trust your landlord, maybe you've known him or her
before renting from them, you could contact the landlord and let them know about the paperwork.

However, if you don't trust the landlord, or you only know them from a business relationship, then don't contact your landlord.

But, I wouldn't shred the documents right away. I would put them in a sealed box, and put the box in a closet. Give it about 9 months, then destroy the documents.

If it was by itself in a bag, then they may have forgot it. Keep it for a bit, see if they contact you, since you have no way of getting in touch with them. If it was amongst the other trash from the house, I'd say they didn't want it, and I'd shred it and toss it.

bri
Pass it to the landlord and let him pass it on. You should not shred important documents like house deeds.

KathyS
I would shred it and toss it. The previous people threw them out so that pretty much means they were meant to be thrown out.

louby loo
that has been thrown bymistake isnt there name on bank statement try ring estate agents and maybe they can forward them on

Vic
Contact your realtor, maybe the former owner wants it. If not, shred it first.

Yes, just shread or burn them as it is obvious that they lost the house via foreclosure and left. You are a good person to do this as many or most would just leave it there for someone to possibly obtain and do possible harm to those people.

Shred everything but the check, and the deed. Then use directory assisatnce to try and contact the previous tenant. Save everything for a month before returning the deed and check back to where they came from. I.e the checks to the bank and the deed to the county.

I think shredding them would be your best bet! I can't believe they left things like that behind, but if they left them they must not need/want them.

southron2002
If you had a closing attorney on your house, get it to him/her
or just shred it

shamieya
shred it, its not yours and it has personal info on it.
