What do you do once your wages start getting garnished?
3 years ago I was unemployed with no health insurance and got pregnant. I got very sick and had to go to the emergency room twice. I went 2 more times as I was miscarrying and was told the total bills were over $7000. About a year ago a collection agency called me to get payments on a smaller part. As I started paying on it, they told me they received more and more bills. Then they told me that I couldn't make my payments anymore because they wouldn't cover the interest and that I had to pay a large lump sum by the end of the next week or they would put it on my credit report. I explained that I'm a single mother that could not come up with that amount so quickly. Later they sued me and added all kinds of fees on the total. Now they started garnishing my wages. With the amount they are taking out, I will not bring home enough to cover my rent and child care alone this month. I might have to quit my job for lack of child care, but then my child and I will be homeless too. What do I do?
Additional Details
I really don't have many bills and my rent is lower than most 1 bedrooms in my area. I don't own a car because I wasn't ready for that expense yet. My main concern is staying employed and keeping a roof over our heads. I cannot pay just my child care and my rent this month. That does not include any other expenses.

You should probably seek professional advice (a lawyer or a personal finance adviser.) There are usually nonprofit agencies that would be available to help you with law and finance things like this. You'll have to see what's available in your area.

The one place I can point you would be http://www.modestneeds.org/
They're an organization that's designed to help people in your situation, and they might be able to get you the cash you need.

melissa

<>< I was under the impression that as long as you were paying something on the medical bills that they could not pursue you. That is just nuts that they can garnish your wages, I had no idea that they could do that for medical bills. I would see if there is some sort of free legal service in your area and see what can be done. My heart goes out to you since you are apparently trying to do the right thing. I wish the best for you!!

WOW I would suggest getting a lawyer.

MadforMAC
I suggest you speak to an attorney that someone recommends (who is trustworthy) to discuss this with and see if what is being done is legal.

if you cant offerd it then the only thing left is to go bankrupt get a lawyer

blondie
call them and see if u can make some kind of arrangments to pay them

Bankruptcy, I’ve done it twice already, and it great for getting creditors and collection agencies of your back. Fight back, it’s you right too.

See,if there is some form of goverment help where you live.Medcaid or foot stamps.

bidhutnet
You need to contact a attorney or get some kind of professional advice. I didn't think they could garnish wages for medical and usually if yo pay anything at all they are fine with it. I'm really sorry a bout all this I hope it gets better for you. But, also you might think of going bankrupt which I don't usually recommend this but it might be what you need to do. Go see a free lawyer

Why ask me?
