What do you do with Overpaid Salary?
I was previously given 2 job offers for a bank and I had to decide which offer I was going to take. After my decision and chose one bank (lets refer to bank A), I was given yet ANOTHER job offer with another bank (lets refer to it as Bank B). I had informed bank A that I no longer interested in the offer and I then signed the contract and took the job in bank B.

I have recently discovered that Bank A have paid me for two weeks. I had no signed a contract or anything to say I took the job. I have written a letter about the pay they should not have given me but I have not heard a response as yet.

What do you think I should do?

try and get in contact with the accounts department via phone and email... they will want the money back it's just a matter of time until they find out and seeing you have already written a letter then they will have it on record...

just keep the money to the side until you find out a way to give it back to them...

it's great to hear that there are still honest genuine people in the world...

I would of done the exact same thing as yourself.

Normally, I would say it is fraud to keep what isn't yuors/

Being a bank though, imagine you had gone overdrawn by accident, they would fine you.

I suggest you write to them, and tell them you will pay the money back less a £30 (or an amount you decide) charge for going overdrawn with you.

See how they like them apples!

Silke
They can legally ask for it back when they catch on.

Pay it back. If you don't then you run the risk of having a criminal record (keeping something that doesn't belong to you is theft). Then you would not have a job with either bank.

Max
Send them a letter and a check for the amount they paid you.

param_dog
Give it to me. I have not eaten for days

They will properly recall the money sometime soon, however there is a banking rule that if the money hasn't been taken back after a period of time, then legally you are able to keep it - I 'll try and find some info for you and edit later

first of all if you are an honest person, which i assume you are otherwise you wouldn't have asked this question here - you should instruct your bank to return the money immediately.
any money you recieve that isn't rightfully yours - no blessing can come of it.

Chips
Give it back. You could be prosecuted (read something about it on the papers few days ago). But oh well, if you have written a letter you are probably safeguarded. Just make sure you don't spend the money until it's sorted.

Shagger
DO NOT use the funds they sent you in error, as they can claim them back, if and when they notice their mistake.

Inform the bank that has mispaid you immediately and request a sort code and account number so you can return the funds, as an MT202 bank to bank financial transfer, claiming funds sent in error. (you can do this using your banks outward CHAPS facility).

If they bank that paid you in error are ignoring you, I assume they paid you by BACS. You can find the sort code these funds came from using a BACS trace, and again return the payment as funds received in error by CHAPS.

As you work in a bank this should be easy to arrange!!

nomy
Do a formal letter to bank A with a cheque returning the the money & informing them of the error they made. you might be surprised a bigger package might await you for being honest.

All the best

Dont spend it. They can (and probably will) claim it back.
They won't let you off as it would set a precedent.

Call the payroll or HR department of that bank and discuss it with them.

What on earth possessed you to write that letter?
