if you have a checking account you can usally cash it agains that with id or atm card

YES, it's possible. Haven't you ever had him cash any checks for you before? In fact, you probably don't even need to go with him ... all you have to do is sign the back of the check and have him give you $25. He can then take the signed check to the bank and deposit it.
